Al Alhy Benghazi (D1) signed experienced 36-year old Ivorian point guard Souleyman Diabate (183cm-76kg-1987, agency: Interperformances) for upcoming 2023-24 season. Diabate played last season at P.Luanda in Angolan Division I.
He ended the previous (2021-22) season at Al Ittihad. 2021-22 was a great season as he was named to Afrobasket.com All-Libyan League Second Team. But the most of that year he spent at US Monastir in Tunisian league where in 6 Basketball Africa League games he had 8.3ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.8apg and 1.2spg in that year.
He has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2016.
He represented Ivory Coast at the Afrobasket Championship six years ago. His stats at that event were 3 games: 6.3ppg, 2.3rpg, 2.0apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 43.8%, 3PT: 14.3%, FT: 50.0%.
Diabate is quite experienced player. He has played in five different countries on three different continents (Europe, Asia and Africa). Diabate has played previously professionally in China (Anhui Putianxingfa), France (Gravelines Dunkerque, Chalons Reims, Chorale de Roanne, Sluc Nancy and Provence Basket), Slovakia (Levice), North Macedonia (MZT Skopje) and Egypt (Zamalek and Somouha).
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others he was voted to Eurobasket.com All-Slovakian League Honorable Mention back in 2018.
He is close to retirement age as a player. It's very possible he may end his playing career at Ahly Benghazi.
