Ulinzi Warriors had to dig deep to beat Lakeside 80-78 in an entertaining Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) quarterfinal play-off tie at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports grounds in Kisumu. The regular season league leader's dangerous trio of Erick Mutoro (180-PG-92), Victor Bosire and John Washika led the visitors to a deserved 25-22 first quarter lead. Lakeside, fresh from winning the 2019 Biro Lich title, would re-organise their offence to outscore the visitors 17-15 at the end of second quarter before William Balozi's charges underlined their title-winning credentials with 24-20 third quarter lead. Mutoro and Bosire would then combine to help the soldiers squeeze a close 18-15 in the final quarter for a narrow 80-78 first win of the best of three. Speaking after the win, Ulinzi head coach Balozi said they are going to build on the away win when the Kisumu-based side visits them in Nairobi. 'It was a tough match against Lakeside and I am happy the team played offensively to win the first of the three matches. Our aim now is to win the remaining two matches and qualify for the semis,' he said. The soldiers came close to winning the title last year but lost to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the finals and would be making their second attempt to reclaim the league title they last won in 2015.
