Kenya Ports Authority's men basketball survived a last minute scare from Umoja, narrowly winning 68-54 to keep their unbeaten run intact as the second leg of the National Classic basketball league got underway at the KPA Hall Makande on Saturday. The dockers still smarting from a disappointing fourth place finish at the Kecoso games in Kakamega a fortnight ago, started the game strongly leading the a determined Umoja 18-10 in the first quarter and 16-9 in the second for a comfortable 34-19 half time lead. Moses Wanjara, Victor Ochieng and Victor Odendo (189-G/F-80) stepped up the pedal in the third quarter for a 16-9 score line putting the game beyond the reach of Umoja, who regrouped for a strong fourth 26-18 win, but it was too late. Victor Odendo top scored for KPA with 16 points, while Arou Ramadhani (F) and Wanjara managed 12 and 10 points respectively, with Okwako scoring 13 points for Umoja, who beat Strathmore Blades in their last assignment. KPA men and women teams, the only unbeaten sides in the National Classic Basketball league, are preparing for the Fiba Zone Five Club Championships in Dar es salaam, Tanzania, with the women seeking to defend the title they have now held onto for the past two years, while KPA men will seeking their first ever title. 'We are using the league matches as part of our preparations for the Fiba club championships which we hope to dominate if the current form of the players is anything to go bye', Christopher Ogutu, KPA team manager said.
