Nairobi City Thunder Extends Historic Unbeaten Streak, Claims Back-To-Back KBF Titles-Sep 14, 2025
Nairobi City Thunder has proven its dominance by winning back-to-back Kenya Basketball Federation titles, completing a perfect 2025 season. They clinched the championship with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), sealing the series with an 80-43 win. This impressive victory extends their incredible unbeaten run to 82 games. With this historic achievement, Thunder is now setting its sights on its next major challenge: becoming the first Kenyan team to represent the country in the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL) in 2025.
Thunder’s path to the title was marked by overwhelming superiority. They opened the finals with an 81-47 rout in Game One and followed with a 93-79 win in Game Two, both on KPA’s home court at Makande Gymnasium. Game Three at Nyayo was no different, as Thunder built an early lead and never looked back. The first quarter saw Thunder explode for a 26-7 advantage, setting a tone of defensive intensity and offensive efficiency. They maintained control through halftime (38-19) and pulled away further in the second half, outscoring KPA 42-24. KPA struggled throughout, failing to produce a single double-digit scorer in the decider. This series sweep underscores Thunder’s consistency: They reached the playoffs unbeaten and dismantled opponents with an average margin of victory exceeding 30 points in the finals. As coach Brad Ibs noted in post-game comments, the team’s focus on execution and resilience turned challenging moments into triumphs. Thunder’s success was a team effort, but several players stood out. Point guard Garang Ding (2001) led the charge in Game Three with 20 points, showcasing his scoring prowess and leadership. Tyler Ongwae added 14 points, while Derrick Ogechi (190-G-1998, college: Midwestern St.) contributed 11, providing balanced scoring from the perimeter and inside. Veteran Griffin Ligare, making his finals debut, delivered a clutch three-pointer in the final minute, energizing the home crowd and sealing the deal. Ligare’s performance highlighted Thunder’s depth, as reserves stepped up seamlessly. On the defensive end, Thunder’s pressure was relentless, holding KPA to low shooting percentages and forcing turnovers. This defensive blueprint, combined with efficient offense, has been the Thunder’s hallmark all season. KPA, despite a valiant effort, couldn’t match Thunder’s intensity. Their top scorers hovered in single digits, a testament to Thunder’s suffocating defense. This title marks Thunder’s second consecutive KBF championship, building on their 2024 win. Their 82-game unbeaten streak is unprecedented in Kenyan basketball, drawing comparisons to global dynasties. Founded as a community team, Thunder has evolved into a powerhouse through strong youth development and strategic coaching. Looking ahead, Thunder’s BAL qualification—earned by winning the FIBA Africa Champions Clubs ROAD TO B.A.L 2025—positions them as Kenya’s first representatives in the league. Set for 2025, this debut offers a chance to showcase Kenyan talent on Africa’s biggest stage. As Diing shared post-game, “This fuels us for more—we’re not done yet.” Thunder’s run inspires Kenya’s basketball scene, potentially attracting investment and talent. With BAL on the horizon, their legacy could extend beyond national borders.
