Ulinzi Warriors Shoot Down Tigers to Reclaim Title After a Decade - Dec 27, 2015

Ulinzi Warriors beat USIU-A Tigers 75-60 in Game Three of the play-off final to be declared the 2015 men's basketball Premier League champions at Safaricom Kasarani Gymnasium on Friday night, reclaiming the title they last won in 2006 to take their league tally to seven. Warriors won by a 3-0 aggregate score in the best-of-five series, having earlier won Games One and Two against Tigers, who were seeking to clinch the championship title for the first time. The soldiers won 81-67 and 70-56 to wrap up the series 3-0. Tigers, who had eliminated a strong Thunder side 3-2 in a tough semi-final, needed to win Game Three to remain in contention for the title. On Friday, Warriors, who sailed into the final with a 3-1 win over the reigning champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), again made a false start, letting the students rock them 12-10 in the first quarter. The late showdown saw coach William Balozi change his approach with Victor Odendo (189-G/F-80) and Ancette Wafula (198-F/C-70) starting to fire on target. The duo teamed up well with rising star Erick Mutoro to lead Warriors in a 14-13 second-quarter run. Warriors, who kicked off their campaign by knocking out Equity Bank 2-1 on the best of three series quarter-finals, had a slim three-point advantage of 33-30 at the break.
