Ghana Police Service has ended the first round of the 2018 Accra Basketball League (ABL) Women's Division first round in first place after beating Braves of Customs 49-46 in an enthralling game between the rivals.
The win guarantees Police stay atop the six team standings prior to the second round's start date which is yet to be known. Police has ten points from winning all five games played in the round with a goal difference of 103.
Braves fall a point behind to second place following the loss and a 43-16 win over Dunks Club in the final game of the round. Braves had a delayed schedule due to its participation in an international competition in Kenya.
Losing heavily to Braves means Dunks end the round with six points from winning just a game in six appearances; Dunks beat Tudu Galaxy to record its sole win of the round. Galaxy sits a spot above Dunks in the standings and has six points with a better goal difference.
Reformers of Prisons and Ghana Fire Service both won two of five games in the round and have seven points respectively. However, Reformers has a goal difference of -12 while Fire Service has a goal difference of -80.
The league will resume after players complete participation in Ghana's National Unity Games next month.

Oxford Heat and Vikings emerged winners in the Girls Division and Boys Division and will represent Ghana in Abidjan in March when the African tournament takes place. Winners of that competition move to the world stage.
Heat topped the Girls Division with a low scoring 3-0 win over Lakers in the final game while Vikings beat Team LAL 10-7 in a more competitive final. The qualifiers were due to start on January 26 and end on January 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
However, consistent postponement and delays put the organizing team led by Coach James Ocloo under pressure to get the qualifiers done. 18 teams played in the Boys Division and four teams played in the Girls Division.
Several players from Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men's Division II and schools that participated in this year's Sprite Ball Championship competed in the qualifiers. Organizers hope the qualifiers are the first of several projects to get Ghana steady progression in the popular basketball format.

Spurs lost 58-90 to host Flamengo in one of two semifinals at the world competition and miss out on competing for the gold medal in the process. The 2017-2018 NBA Gatorade League Champions played out a poor game.
Brimah produced eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and four blocks in 25 minutes of action on the court. The 6 foot 10 inch defender converted four of six field goal attempts but missed both free throw attempts. He didn't attempt a three point shot.
Former Oklahoma City Thunder Forward Josh Huestis led Spurs in scoring with ten points and was the only player on the team to score in double figures in the game. Spurs converted just four of 20 shots from three point range.
Flamengo was led by Argentine Franco Baldi who scored 19 points in the winning effort and NBA Champion Anderson Varejao featured for the host team.
Spurs play South American Champions San Lorenzo for the bronze medal after the latter lost 64-86 to Basketball League Champions AEK Athens. Two time NBA Champion and Canada International Joel Anthony plays for San Lorenzo.

This year's GHATUSA-Ghana Technical Universities / Polytechnics Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games Basketball Finals ended earlier today at the Accra Technical University (ATU) Court in Tudu with mixed results.
ATU and Takoradi Technical University (TTU) faced off in the Men's and Women's Final with either institution winning a gold medal apiece. In the Men's Division, ATU beat TTU 38-25 and in the Women's Division, TTU beat ATU 21-19.
Both institutions have dominated both basketball divisions for several years and shared the spoils in this year's competition. ATU's Female team was unfortunate to force overtime or clinch the win in regulation time to lose by a two point margin.
ATU's Male team raced off to a 20-8 win against Takoradi at the end of the first half but its lead was trimmed to six (26-20) heading to the fourth quarter after a strong TTU performance in the third quarter with Dennis Antwi and Benjamin Sagoe leading the charge.
Sunyani Technical University (STU) and Koforidua Technical university (KTU) rounded up the podium by finishing in third place in the Men's and Women's Divisions respectively. Both teams beat Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) to clinch bronze in the multisport competition.
