Al Ahly Benghazi (D1) signed 33-year-old Egyptian international 206cm center Assem Marei (college: MSU). He transferred from LG Sakers in the South Korean KBL league. Marei had impressive averages of 16.3ppg, 14.4rpg, 5.4apg, and 2.1spg in 55 games last season. He was named League Player of the Week 10 times. Marei also participated in 4 games in the East Asia Super League, where he posted remarkable stats: 20.8ppg, 12.5rpg (ranked 3rd in the league), 7.0apg (2nd place), and 3.0spg (league leader). Last summer, he played for Al Ahly Tripoli.
He has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2016.
Marei has been a member of the Egyptian international program for several years. He has played for the Egyptian senior team since 2011 and previously for the Under 19 National Team in 2011.
Marei also represented Egypt at the FIBA World Cup in Philippines-Japan-Indonesia three years ago. During this event, he scored an average of 12.2 points per game and had 8 rebounds per game.
He is a very experienced player. Marei has quite traveled the world as his pro career brought him to five different countries on three different continents (Europe, Africa and of course North America). He has played professionally in France (Metropolitans), Germany (Bamberg and Bayreuth), Korea, Lithuania (Siauliai) and Turkey (Pinar Karsiyaka and Galatasaray).
Among many awards, he won the Basketball Africa League championship title in 2025. Marei received the Asia-Basket.com All-South Korean League Player of the Year award and the Asia-Basket.com All-South Korean League Import Player of the Year award in 2025.
He graduated from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2015 and is currently in his eleventh season in pro basketball.
