Barber's Team USA Cruises to Quarterfinals

New York University's Meg Barber and her Team USA U17 Women advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup with a 114-45 victory over Egypt on Wednesday night in Irapuato, Mexico.It's the fourth consecutive victory for the USA at the tournament and third straight in which they've scored over 100 points and held their opponent to 45 or fewer.Egypt scored the first points of the game, but Barber's team took control from there, responding with a 23-3 run and holding a 27-7 lead after the first quarter.Hailee Swan's layup with 7:10 left in the second made it 39-9, and the USA went into halftime with a 55-17 advantage. It was more of the same in the second half, as Team USA out-scored Egypt 59-28 over the final two quarters.Swain and Jerzy Robinson (6'1''-G-2008) scored 20 points apiece to lead the Americans, while Lanie Grant (5'9''-G-2007) added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with four boards, three assists and two steals. Kelsi Andrews (6'3''-C-2008) finished with 10 points (4-of-5 FG) and McKenna Woliczko (6'2''-F-2008) nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.Team USA, the highest-scoring team in the round of 16, look ahead to Japan in Friday's quarterfinals after they defeated Mali, 100-60, in their round of 16 matchup.
