Al Zamalek Cairo (Superleague) has confirmed the addition of experienced 35-year-old American shooting guard, O.J. Mayo (193cm-100kg-1987, college: USC, agency: Diamond Sports), to their roster for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Mayo, who played for the team last season, joins Canadian player Adham Eleeda as the second foreign player on the roster. In the 2023 final, Mayo's team reached the Egyptian Cup Finalist.
In the previous (2021-22) season, he played for UNICS Kazan in the Russian league. In 20 Euroleague games, he averaged 5.8 points per game and 1.2 rpg. He also played 14 games in the VTB United League, where he averaged 7.6 ppg and 2.3 rpg. His contributions helped the team reach the semifinals.
In 2008, he was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) as the #3 overall pick. He graduated from the University of Southern California, and this upcoming season will mark his 16th in professional basketball.
He's a highly experienced player, having played professionally in five different countries across four continents. He's had the opportunity to taste the life of a pro basketball player in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and North America. His previous professional stints include playing for the Flying Leopards and Hunan in China, Atleticos in Puerto Rico, teams in Russia, Dacin Tigers and Fubon Braves in Taiwan, and NBA teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Memphis Grizzlies.
He was voted to the Taiwanese All-Star Game in 2019. It's highly likely that he will retire while playing for Zamalek. Mayo's team reached the final of the Egyptian Cup in 2023.
