Al Ahly crowned Egypt Cup champions over Zamalek-Apr 20, 2023
Al Ahly have been crowned Egypt Basketball Cup for the second successive year after defeating arch-rivals Zamalek 72-65 in the final. Al Ahly had reached the final after beating Al-Jazira in the semi-finals while Zamalek qualified after overcoming Ittihad of Alexandria. The final came just a few weeks after Al Ahly beat Zamalek comfortably in the Super League playoffs semi-finals over three ties, 71-62, 79-48, 91-57, to set-up a final against Ittihad of Alexandria. This time it wasn't an easy task for the Reds as Zamalek remained ahead on the scoreboard for the majority of the game, winning the first quarter 24-18. The Whites continued their dominance across the second quarter taking a 39-33 lead into half-time; however, Al Ahly managed to reduce the deficit to just one point, 39-33, in the third quarter. Al Ahly finally took the lead and managed to win the tie in the fourth and final quarter, sealing a 72-65 win to clinch the title in a dramatic fashion. This marks Al Ahly's second Egypt Basketball Cup in a row and their 11th in the club's history, equalling both Zamalek and Ittihad of Alexandria's records. It also marks Al Ahly's second title of the season after winning the Mortabat League championship.
