AfroBasket 2023: Nigeria ease past Congo DR in the opener

Nigeria - Congo DR 69-35

The defending champions overcame Congo DR in the opener of AfroBasket 2023. Nigeria easily controlled the game for the final 69-35 win. Nigeria opened the game with a 16-8 run to take the lead in the game and never looked behind. They won the second frame 13-10 as Blessing Ejiofor (196-C, college: WVU, agency: Areus Sports) made two free throws for 29-18 lead at the halftime. Moreover, Nigeria won the third period 17-14 and then erupted with a 19-0 run to start the last stanza. Cecile Nyoka (177-F-1986) managed to score for Congo in the last minute of the game and then Malu Irebu Grace scored two more free throws. Ifunaya Okoro (180-F-1999) and Olaoluwatomi Taiwo brought the last points for the winning side. Elizabeth Balogun (185-G/F-2000) and Ifunaya Okoro top-scored for the winners with 11 points each. Gracia Nguz (1992) replied with 12 points in the losing effort.
