Cape Verde recovers from Game One to book spot in Afrobasket

Cape Verde will compete in the 2019 FIBA Women's African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) after progressing ahead of Guinea in the ongoing qualifiers. Cape Verde beat Guinea 60-48 in the second leg of the qualifiers in its capital Praia after losing 48-50 in Game One played on Friday, May 17 at the same venue. Guinea relied on a big fourth quarter showing to clinch the first of two games between the two West African nations this past weekend. After leading the first game with 20 points and 12 rebounds, University of Connecticut's Batouly Camara (188-F-96) didn't fare too well after landing in foul trouble early in the game. However, the night belonged to 19 year old Cape Verde star Joseanna Vaz who led the game with 20 points with teammate Allexia Barros adding 15 points. Cape Verde becomes the sixth team to qualify to the biannual competition after Cameroon recently confirmed its place in the tournament. The top four ranked nations in the 2017 AfroBasket including winners Nigeria automatically qualified to the competition.
