Kenya registered the first win at the African Championship in Mozambique. They held off Cape Verde in overtime to improve at 1-4 record in Group B. Hilda Indasi (85) finished with 27 points to pace the winners.
Kenya eked out a 16:15 lead after ten minutes of action. They managed to boost the gap in the second frame. Kenya established a 33:24 halftime lead. But Cape Verde denied the deficit in the third term. Moreover they eked out a 40:39 advantage at the third break. But Kenya regained the lead and made it 53:51 with 39 seconds to go in regulation. But Hilda Indasi answered with a jumper to force overtime. Kenya opened a five-point lead midway through the extra period. They held on to the advantage in the reminder of the contest and sealed the victory. Silalei Shani-Owuor (188-F-86, college: Messiah) had 15 points and 13 boards, while Purity Auma (92) added 11 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Vandell Andrade (181-F-93) responded with 21 points, 10 boards and 8 steals. Jade Leitao (180-F/C-83, college: Fordham) notched 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
