Angola celebrated the second straight win at the start of the African Championship. The defending champions outscored Cape Verde for 2-0 record on top of Group B.
Angola poured in 20 points in the first term and gained a 4-point lead. They stretched the lead in the second quarter. The reigning champions ensured a comfortable 41:27 halftime lead. Cape Verde narrowed the gap in the third term. They got within 9 points at the final intermission. But Angola took over in the fourth frame. They went on a stunning 23:7 rally to seal the win. Nacissela Mauricio (181-F-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas) finished with 15 points, 9 rebound and 6 assists for Angola. Nadir Manuel (185-PF-86) and Fineza Eusebio (90) added 12 points apiece for the winners. Jade Leitao (180-F/C-83, college: Fordham) responded with 20 points for Cape Verde. Vandell Andrade (181-F-93) had 10 points in the loss.
