Mozambique recorded the first win at the 2009 Lusophony Games in Portugal. They held off Cape Verde to improve at 1-2 record. Cape Verde slipped at 0-4 record at the bottom of the ladder. Deolinda Ngulela (170-G-81, college: Emporia St.) scored 21 points and dished out 6 assists to lead Mozambique.
Mozambique did not waste too much time to mark their dominance. They went on a 22:9 run in the starting quarter to ensure a comfortable lead at the first break. Mozambique held Cape Verde to only 8 points in the second quarter to post a 23-point lead at the interval. Cape Verde slowed their opponents down a bit in the third stanza but could not threaten the margin. Mozambique coasted to a 26-point buffer with ten minutes remaining. The teams exchanged the baskets in the final period as a Nasir Sale team coasted to the victory. Clarisse Machanguana (194-C/F-73, college: ODU) had 17 points and 13 boards for Mozambique. Leia Dongue added 10 points and 7 rebounds in the victory. Jade Leitao (178-F/C-83, college: Fordham) responded with 23 points, 5 boards and 3 assists for Cape Verde. Denise Fonseca (171-G-80) chipped in 11 points in the loss.
