Champs KPA cruise to easy win in Zone 5 opener

Kenya Ports Authority started their FIBA Africa Women's Club Championship title defence on a roaring note, obliterating the Young Sisters of Burundi 69-42 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. The Porters showed their intention from start in this Group 'C' game with a strong statement as soon as Victoria Reynolds opened the tally, sinking seven straight points. This gave KPA an early lift-off as they easily sailed away with a strong 19-1 cushion in the first half before things changed in the second stanza. The Burundians cut the advantage by tying the scores with a 19-19 deadlock but still trailed 38-20 at halftime. The third quarter belonged to Young Sisters as they battled hard and managed to take a surprise 14-12 edge going into the last quarter. But coach Anthony Ojukwu had a different tactical approach immediately after the last stanza got off. KPA outwitted them 19-8. "It was a good start but I had to give everybody a chance to show her case. That's why the scores went back and fourth. Overall, I am happy with the Ayers who came from the USA and we will continue to work towards achieving our goal," he said. Reynolds showed the way and ended up with 17 points while captain Natalie Akinyi (PG) recorded 10 for KPA. The losers were led by Kristina King (190-F/C-1995, college: WVU, agency: Elite Basketball Agents) who led with 10 points. The two Kenyan teams in this competition, KPA and Equity Bank Hawks have a break today (Tuesday) and resume action on Wednesday.
