FRANCISTOWN: On-form leaders, BDF V face a stern test this evening when they take on impressive debutants, Panthers at the University of Botswana (UB) Courts in the women basketball league. BDF V have collected maximum points from the four games they have played so far.
Their main challengers for the title are defending champions Police and Panthers. Police gave BDF V easy points recently when they failed to dress up in time for the came. The two sides are still favourites for a 1-2 finish and another match-up in the National Championships, though Panthers might spoil the party for Police if they continue to slip-up.
In mid-table, seasoned campaigners NIIT Ravens should be too good for Relics and newcomers Splinters. They have however already lost a crucial game against the Relics who are rebuilding after losing a good number of their players to Panthers. The NIIT girls are fourth with five points. Debutantes Splinters are struggling in their debut season and are yet to win a match.
Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) chairperson Kabo Khama has said that instead of four rounds, the women's league will have only two with each side playing five games. 'The ladies league has six teams this year compared to four last year. The first round will end on July 9. We will then break for four weeks and start the second round end of August,' he explained. Khama said the mid season break will be the transfer window. 'We may see players transferring and new players coming through.
Teams are expected to strengthen and Relics who are now affiliated to UB will be expecting to receive new players with the UB reopening in August. The second round promises to be as exciting as ever,' he promised.
