Primeiro de Agosto and Sporting Sweep Into a Liga Azule Final Rematch- June 4, 2026The 2026 Liga Azule will end the same way it did a year ago. Both heavyweights swept their best-of-three semifinals to set up a repeat of the 2025 women's national championship final between Primeiro de Agosto and defending champions Sporting Clube de Luanda.
Primeiro de Agosto, the most decorated club in Angolan women's basketball with 12 national titles, never looked troubled against the young side from Casa do Pessoal do Porto do Lobito. The military club won the opener 58-45 at the Pavilhao Vitorino Cunha on May 31, then traveled to Lobito and closed the series out with an even more comfortable 65-45 win on June 3 to advance 2-0 and reach a second consecutive final. Sporting de Luanda needed a sterner test to join them. The title-holders took the first leg 57-48 at the Pavilhao Arena Kilamba on May 31, then survived a tight rematch with Interclube on June 3, edging it 68-65 to complete the sweep and avoid the risk of a deciding third game. The final renews one of the sharpest rivalries in the Angolan game. Sporting reached the summit for the first time in their history last season, sweeping Primeiro de Agosto 3-0 to claim a maiden championship, and they now defend that crown against a side desperate to reclaim it. Primeiro de Agosto arrive with momentum and a psychological edge: just days before the semifinals, on May 29, they beat Sporting 70-65 to lift the Angola Cup, underlining the form that has marked their season. The championship series will be played to the best of five and is scheduled to begin on June 10, with the host venue to be announced by the Angolan Basketball Federation. |
