Sporting de Luanda complete stunning comeback, dethrone 1 de Agosto in decisive Game 5 to reach Unitel Basket final- April 30, 2026Sporting de Luanda produced the upset of the 48th Unitel Basket season on Tuesday night, overwhelming Clube Desportivo 1 de Agosto 87-71 in the decisive fifth game of their semifinal series at the Arena do Kilamba to clinch a 3-2 series victory and book a place in the championship final against Petro de Luanda.
The Leoes — who had trailed the series 1-2 after Agosto won Games 2 and 3 — stormed back with consecutive victories to pull off one of the most remarkable semifinal comebacks in recent Angolan basketball history. Sporting will now face unbeaten and defending champions Petro de Luanda in the best-of-seven final, with the green-and-whites making their first championship series appearance in years. The decisive Game 5 was never close. Sporting set the tempo from the opening minutes with aggressive defense and transition offense that Agosto simply could not handle. After a tense first quarter, Sporting's superiority became increasingly apparent as they pulled away throughout the second and third periods. The 16-point winning margin — the largest of the series — underlined how emphatically the momentum had swung in Sporting's direction. The series had been a dramatic rollercoaster. Sporting struck first in Game 1 on April 21, rallying from halftime deficits in the second half to steal a 70-66 victory at the Kilamba. Agosto responded with authority, winning Game 2 convincingly 79-65 behind Geovani Kibinga (C)'s 24 points, then grinding out a 69-59 Game 3 triumph to take a 2-1 series lead and stand one win from the final. That's when Sporting found another gear. In Game 4 on Sunday, small forward Islando Manuel (192-F-1991) exploded for 23 points to lead Sporting to a 79-71 road victory that forced the "negra" — the winner-take-all fifth game. Joao Oliveira (PG) added 18 points in that crucial contest, while Agosto's most productive player was point guard Elcane Paca (179-G-2001) with just 14. Despite 1 de Agosto assistant coach Lazare Adingono's pre-game confidence that the military side would prevail in the decider, it was Sporting who carried the momentum into Game 5 and turned it into a rout. The result sets up a mouth-watering Unitel Basket final between Petro de Luanda — who swept Interclube 3-0 in their semifinal and remain unbeaten all season — and Sporting de Luanda, the Cinderella story of this playoff run. Petro, chasing a seventh consecutive championship and 19th overall, will be heavy favorites, but Sporting have already proven in this series that they are capable of overcoming the odds. |
