Petro de Luanda sweep into final; 1 de Agosto one win from joining them- April 26, 2026Petro de Luanda booked their place in the 48th Unitel Basket final with an emphatic 3-0 sweep of Interclube, while 1° de Agosto moved within one victory of joining them after taking a 2-1 lead over Sporting de Luanda in the other semifinal.
Petro de Luanda 3, Interclube 0 The defending champions were never seriously tested across three games against Interclube — the same opponent they dispatched 98-80 in the Taca de Angola final just 11 days earlier. Petro's firepower and depth proved overwhelming from the opening tip of the series. Gerson Goncalves (193-F/G-1996) and Milton Valente (198-F-1998) set the tone in Game 1 at the Cidadela on April 21, combining for 46 points as Petro applied "chapa 100" — breaking the century mark in a commanding 101-87 victory. Goncalves led all scorers with 26 while Valente added 20. Game 2 the following night was the closest Interclube came to stealing one. The Policias hung tough and kept the contest within reach throughout, but Petro held their nerve to prevail 93-90 at the same venue, taking a stranglehold 2-0 series lead. Any remaining suspense evaporated in Game 3 on April 25. Petro dominated from start to finish at the Cidadela, pulling away for a 103-86 victory that completed the sweep and sent them through to the best-of-seven final for a seventh consecutive season. Coach Sergio Valdeolmillos's squad remain unbeaten in the 2025-26 domestic season — a perfect record through the regular season, quarterfinal sweep of Vila Clotilde, and now the semifinal demolition of Interclube. 1 de Agosto 2, Sporting de Luanda 1 The other semifinal has delivered the drama that the Petro-Interclube series lacked. Sporting de Luanda shocked the military-affiliated Agostinos in Game 1 at the Pavilhao Multiusos do Kilamba on April 21, rallying from halftime deficits in successive quarters to steal a 70-66 road victory. The quarter scores told the story of a momentum shift: Agosto led 23-21 after the first and 43-35 at the half, but Sporting surged in the second half to outscore their hosts down the stretch. 1 de Agosto responded emphatically in Game 2 the following evening at the same venue, riding Geovani Kibinga (C)'s 24-point explosion to a convincing 79-65 victory that leveled the series at 1-1. The power forward dominated in the paint and was the decisive factor as the Agostinos' superior physicality asserted itself. Game 3 tipped the balance back toward Agosto. Playing once again at Kilamba, 1 de Agosto's defense clamped down on Sporting, holding the Leoes to just 59 points in a controlled 69-59 victory to take a 2-1 series lead. Sporting now face elimination in Game 4, needing to win twice to keep their season alive. Should 1 de Agosto close out the series, the final will pit the two titans of Angolan basketball — Petro de Luanda and 1° de Agosto — against each other for the third consecutive year. Petro won last season's final 4-2 for their sixth consecutive championship and 18th title overall. Sporting, meanwhile, are trying to reach the final for the first time since their return to the top flight. |
