We bring you last week's top performances from Angolans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.
#1. This week's number one is former international center
Bruno Fernando (208-1998, college:
Maryland, currently plays in NBA). He could not help the
Houston Rockets (20-59) in their last game. Despite Fernando's very good performance the Houston Rockets (20-59) were edged
121-118 on the road by the Sacramento Kings.
He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds in 22 minutes on the court; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Fernando's first season in pro basketball. It was Rockets' fourth consecutive loss in a row.
There are only three games left until the end of the NBA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
This year Fernando averages: 6.9ppg, 4.0rpg, 2FGP: 72.5%(29-40) and FT: 57.9% in 10 games he played so far.
He played for the Angolan senior national team year ago.
#2. Second place goes to an experienced former international power forward
Antonio Monteiro (204-1989, currently plays in Portugal). Monteiro was not able to help
Sporting (19-4) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance the third-placed Sporting (19-4) was defeated
90-76 in a derby game by the second-ranked Benfica in the Places 1-4 group.
Monteiro recorded 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
Monteiro's overall stats this season are: 8.7ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.3apg, 2FGP: 53.1%, 3FGP: 37.7% and FT: 64.3%.
He has a dual citizenship: Angolan and Portuguese.
Despite Monteiro played previously for the Portuguese U20 national team, he played also for the Angolan national team in 14.
#3. The Angolan player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward
Julio De Assis (203-1992, agency:
Duran International, currently plays in Spain). He managed to help Club Ourense Baloncesto to win against the 14th-ranked Marbella (7-17)
63-50 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) in Saturday night's game.
De Assis scored only 4 points.
Club Ourense Baloncesto (17-6) is placed first in West group.
There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial.
De Assis' overall stats this season are: 2.7ppg, 4.1rpg.
He is another player who holds two passports: Angolan and Spanish.
De Assis played for the Angolan national team year ago.
#4. Guard
Gil Silva (185-2000, currently plays in Portugal) was not able to secure a victory for
Academia (2-21) in their game against Olhanense (8-15) in the Portuguese Proliga (second division).
He recorded 5 points.
Academia (#8) was crushed
98-70 at home by the higher-ranked Olhanense (#7) in the Places 9-16 group.
It was Academia's 11th consecutive loss in a row.
Silva's team will play only one more game in the Relegation Round.
Silva's overall stats this season are: 4.8ppg, 2.9rpg and 1.2spg.
He has both Angolan and Portuguese nationalities.
Silva used to play for the Angolan U18 national team
back in 18.
The list of other players, who all have Angolan passport but never been selected to any of Angolan national teams: #1. Silmy Caputo (184-G-2002, currently plays in Switzerland) managed to help Union Neuchatel Basket in a victory against the eighth-ranked Starwings (7-17)
67-53 in the Swiss SBL on Wednesday night.
Caputo recorded only 3 points in 12 minutes.
Union Neuchatel Basket (15-10) is placed third in the SBL.
There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
This year Caputo averages just 1.8ppg in 11 games he played so far.
#2. Experienced
Benedito Suca (196-F-1984, currently plays in Portugal). He could not help
Academia (2-21) to beat Olhanense (8-15).
Suca recorded only 4 points in 22 minutes.
Academia (#8) was crushed
98-70 at home by the higher-ranked (#7) Olhanense in the Places 9-16 group.
It was Academia's 11th consecutive loss in a row.
His team will play only one more game in the Relegation Round. And now that game is very crucial.
Suca has relatively good stats this year: 10.7ppg and 5.9rpg in 12 games.
