Most successful club on the continent, Primeiro de Agosto made it two straight wins with a 70-64 win over Rwanda Energy Group Basketball Club (REG) on Saturday to advance to the Elite 8 of the maiden edition of the FIBA Africa Basketball League. Islando Manuel (192-F-91) led the way with a game high 26 points and eight rebounds while Manny Queza came off the bench to score 10 points and four asst in 19 minutes. Agosto had a slow start in the first quarter (13-19) and were poor on shooting from the arc converting just 7/29 from the deep with Manuel scoring 4 of 8 of his three pointers. Two REG players finished in double figures, Olivier Shyaka (197-PF-95) 15 points and Engelbert Beleck recorded a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rwanda international Kenny Gasana had 11 boards and was 1 point short of a double-double, he scored 9 points in 36 minutes. 8-time champions Agosto becomes the first team to qualify to the Elite 8 with a game to spare. They will play Ferroviaro de Beira who are already out of the competition on Sunday. Beira lost their second game in a row to host Al Ahly after dominating the first half of the game. The Mozambicans could have recorded their first win but surrendered their lead with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. The host took a two point lead heading to the last quarter and also limited Beira to just 17 points in the fourth (24-17). Following a slow start, Reginald Holmes (193-G-87, college: Morgan St.) scored a game high 23 points, five rebounds and three steals for Al Ahly. Ramy Gunady added 15 points and four asst, Deuce Bello (192-G-92, college: E.Tenn.St.) scored 11 points, Mohamed Abouelnar had 11 points, five rebounds and seven asst to go with it. The 2016 champions shook off the early scare to win their first game 86-77 against Ferroviaro de Beira and a chance to remain in the competition. Robinson Opong had a team high 20 points, 13 rebounds and 4 of 9 from the arc. Other players who had double figures: Elves Houana 13, Helton Ubisse 12 points and nine rebounds while Ivan Machave contributed 11 points from the bench. Here is the weekly review of the top performing Angolan players, who play currently abroad.
#1. This week's number one is an international center Yanick Moreira (211-91, college: SMU, currently plays in Italy). He could not help Virtus Bologna (10-9) in their last game. Despite Moreira's very good performance Virtus Bologna was badly defeated 87-70 on the road by the higher-ranked (#3) Vanoli Cremona.
He was the second best scorer with 16 points. Moreira also added 6 rebounds in 28 minutes on the court.
Moreira has relatively good stats this year: 11.0ppg, 7.4rpg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 64.9%(24-37) and FT: 77.8% in five games he played so far.
He is currently a member of the Angolan senior national team.
#2. Second place goes to former international guard Edmir Lucas (191-93, currently plays in United Kingdom). Lucas led London CR to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Scorchers (3-16) crushing them 94-73 in the British BBL last Sunday.
He was MVP of the game. Lucas scored 18 points and added 5 passes.
London City Royals (10-6) is placed fourth in the BBL.
It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row.
It's Lucas' first season with the team.
This year he has relatively solid stats: 10.2ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.3apg, 2FGP: 43.6%, 3FGP: 47.2%(25-53) and FT: 72.2%.
Lucas has a dual citizenship: Portuguese and Angolan.
Former Desportivo 1. De Agosto Luanda starter played for the Angolan national team in 2017.
#3. The Angolan player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International, currently plays in Italy). He was not able to help Mens Sana 1871 (10-11) in their last game. Despite Morais' very good performance the 12th-placed Mens Sana 1871 (10-11) lost 82-96 in Trapani to the higher-ranked (#11) Pall. in the West group.
He was the second best scorer with 17 points. Morais also added 5 rebounds in 32 minutes.
Morais has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.3ppg, 5.7rpg, 3.2apg, 2FGP: 46.5%, 3FGP: 38.8% and FT: 88.1% in 20 games.
Morais is another player who holds two passports: Angolan and Portuguese.
He is also a member of the Angolan senior national team.
#4. Forward Bruno Fernando (208-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an Maryland's surprising victory against the University of Nebraska 60-45 in the NCAA in Wednesday night's game.
Fernando recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 19 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks.
The University of Maryland has a very good - conference record this season.
Fernando has reliable stats this year: 14.8ppg, 10.7rpg, 1.9apg and 2.0bpg.
He used to play for the Angolan national team
back in 2016.
#5. Former international center Valdelicio Joaquim (208-90, also represented by Duran International, college: Hawaii, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Quimper UJAP (6-11) in their last game. Despite Joaquim's very good performance Quimper UJAP lost 79-87 on the opponent's court to the higher-ranked (#10) Nantes.
He was the top scorer with 26 points. Joaquim also added 8 rebounds in 32 minutes.
Joaquim's stats this year are: 14.1ppg, 7.8rpg and 1.1apg in 17 games.
He used to play for the Angolan national team
two years ago.
#6. Forward Jose Miguel (185-85, currently plays in Portugal) contributed to a 2-point Electrico FC's victory against the sixth-ranked Beira Mar (5-12) 73-71 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) in Saturday night's game.
He scored 9 points in 33 minutes.
Electrico FC (7-10) is placed third in Group B.
This year Miguel's overall stats are: 9.8ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.3spg in 12 games.
He is a former university international player as he played for the Angolan team twelve years ago.

#1. Experienced Benedito Suca (196-F-84, currently plays in Portugal) was the major contributor in Academia's victory against the eighth-ranked Angrabasket (9-8) 76-69 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) on Sunday night.
Suca recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks and 3 steals.
Academia do Lumiar Lisboa (13-4) is placed second in Group A.
It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row.
Suca is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his eighth year in Academia's roster.
Suca's stats this season are: 12.3ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1bpg.
#2.Edson Ferreira (183-G-86, currently plays in Portugal) managed to help Electrico FC to win against the sixth-ranked Beira Mar (5-12) 73-71 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) last Saturday.
Ferreira scored only 2 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 7 assists.
Electrico FC (7-10) is placed third in Group B.
Ferreira's total stats this season are: 4.4ppg, 2.6rpg and 2.5apg.
#3.Paulo Sopita (203-PF-93, currently plays in Japan). He could not help Iwate Big Bulls (5-21) to beat Koshigaya Alphas (19-7).
Sopita scored only 4 points in 9 minutes on the court.
