Yanick Moreira's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Angolans playing currently abroad: - Jan 28, 2019

We bring you last week's top performances from Angolans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Yanick Moreira (211-91, college: SMU, currently plays in Italy). He contributed to a Virtus Bologna's victory against the closely-ranked Alma TR (8-9) 82-74 in the Italian Serie A in Sunday night's game. Moreira had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 12 rebounds in 19 minutes on the court. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (9-8) is placed eighth in the Serie A. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Moreira has relatively good stats this year: 11.5ppg, 9.0rpg, 2FGP: 71.4% in two games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Angolan senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Bruno Fernando (208-98, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA. Fernando could not help the Maryland (5-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the Maryland was defeated 78-67 on the road by the University of Illinois. Fernando recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 10 rebounds. This season Fernando has relatively solid stats: 14.6ppg, 10.3rpg, 2.0apg, 2.0bpg, 2FGP: 69.1%(114-165), 3FGP: 28.6% and FT: 75.8%. He played for the Angolan national team in 2016.

   #3. The Angolan player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International, currently plays in Italy). Morais was not able to help Mens Sana 1871 (9-9) in their last game. Despite his good performance the tenth-placed Mens Sana 1871 (9-9) lost 42-53 in Rieti to the second-ranked Zeus EG in the West group. Morais was the top scorer with 12 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 31 minutes. Morais has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.9ppg, 5.8rpg, 3.1apg, 2FGP: 45.7%, 3FGP: 38.1% and FT: 86.8% in 17 games. Morais has a dual citizenship: Angolan and Portuguese. He is also a member of the Angolan senior national team.

   #4. Forward Julio De Assis (203-92, also represented by Duran International, currently plays in Spain) led Univ.Burgos to a victory over the sixth-ranked Mondragon (9-5) 81-64 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) in Saturday night's game. De Assis was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 14 rebounds. De Assis also added 5 assists. CB Universidad de Burgos (13-1) is placed first in Group A-A. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This season De Assis has very high stats. He averages: 20.9ppg, 9.0rpg, 2.9apg and 1.4spg. De Assis is another player who holds two passports: Angolan and Spanish. He is also Angolan national team player.

   #5. Former international forward Antonio Monteiro (204-89, currently plays in Portugal) helped FC Porto win their game against the league leader Benfica (15-1) 96-78 in the Portuguese LPB last Saturday. Monteiro recorded 7 points in only 11 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. FC Porto (12-4) is placed third in the LPB. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. This year Monteiro's overall stats are: 4.9ppg and 4.9rpg in 14 games. He has both Angolan and Portuguese nationalities. Despite Monteiro played previously for the Portuguese U20 national team, he is currently in the Angolan national team roster.

   #6. Center Valdelicio Joaquim (208-90, another player represented by Duran International, college: Hawaii, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in a Quimper UJAP's victory against the closely-ranked Poitiers (6-10) 90-85 in the French ProB (second division) on Saturday night. Joaquim was the best player in that game. He recorded 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Quimper UJAP (6-9) is placed 12th in the ProB. It's Joaquim's first season with the team. Joaquim has reliable stats this year: 13.7ppg, 7.6rpg and 1.1apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Angolan senior team two years ago.

   #7. Former University international forward Jose Miguel (185-85, currently plays in Portugal) was not able to secure a victory for Electrico FC (5-10) in their game against Dragon Force (5-10) in the Portuguese Proliga (second division). He recorded 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Electrico FC (#5) was crushed 96-56 in Porto by the higher-ranked Dragon Force (#3) in the Group B. It was Electrico FC's sixth consecutive loss in a row. Miguel's total stats this season are: 9.9ppg, 4.2rpg and 1.2spg. He used to play for the Angolan university national team twelve years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Angolan passport but never been selected to any of Angolan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Edson Ferreira (183-G-86, currently plays in Portugal). Ferreira could not help Electrico FC (5-10) to beat Dragon Force (5-10). He recorded 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 23 minutes. Electrico FC (#5) was crushed 96-56 on the road by the higher-ranked (#3) Dragon Force in the Group B. It was Electrico FC's sixth consecutive loss in a row. This year Ferreira's total stats are: 4.6ppg, 1.9rpg and 2.1apg in 11 games he played so far.

   #2. Benedito Suca (196-F-84, currently plays in Portugal) led Academia to a victory against the sixth-ranked Maia Basket (9-6) 73-60 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) on Sunday night. Suca recorded 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks in 26 minutes. Academia do Lumiar Lisboa (11-4) is placed fourth in Group A. Suca is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his eighth year in Academia's roster. He averaged so far 11.8ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.1apg in 14 games.

   #3. Paulo Sopita (203-PF-93, currently plays in Japan) was not able to help Iwate Big Bulls in their game against Saitama Broncos (12-10) in the Japanese B League D3. Sopita cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points. Iwate Big Bulls were edged 82-79 in Saitama by the higher-ranked Broncos (#5). It was Iwate Big Bulls' tenth consecutive loss in a row. Sopita's total stats this season are: 1.7ppg and 2.3rpg.

Petro win in AfroLeague's first round - 13 hours ago
Petro de Luanda squad began well on Friday their campaign in group D of the African clubs championship in basketball, now being dubbed AfroLeague, by beating in Antananarivo (Madagascar) the local COSPN team by 99-76. Angola's Petro de Luanda's basketball team travelled Tuesday to Antananarivo, Madagascar, where they will participate in the group stage bout of the African League, to run from 15 to 17 February. Here is the weekly review of the top performing Angolan players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is an international center Yanick Moreira (211-91).
