We bring you last week's top performances from Angolans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Carlos Morais
Carlos Morais
   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International, currently plays in Italy). He led Mens Sana 1871 to a victory over the 12th-ranked Pall. Trapani (3-3) 86-75 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. Morais was MVP of the game. He scored 25 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 32 minutes on the court. Soundreef Mens Sana 1871 Siena (4-2) is placed sixth in West group. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Morais' first year with the team. Morais has relatively good stats this season: 13.8ppg, 6.2rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 35.0% and FT: 87.5% in five games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Angolan and Portuguese. Morais is currently a member of the Angolan senior national team.

Yanick Moreira

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Yanick Moreira (211-91, college: SMU, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He contributed to a 1-point PAOK's victory against the closely-ranked JSF Nanterre (1-3) 83-82 in the Basketball Champions League last Tuesday. Moreira recorded 12 points. PAOK Thessaloniki (1-3) is placed sixth in group B. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Moreira's first year with the team. This season he averages: 9.5ppg, 4.8rpg, 2FGP: 56.0%(14-25) and FT: 66.7%. Moreira is in the roster of the Angolan senior national team.

   #3. The Angolan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Julio De Assis (203-92, currently plays in Spain). He was the major contributor in Univ.Burgos' victory against the third-ranked Ardoi (3-1) 103-95 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) on Saturday night. De Assis recorded 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 34 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in Group A-A. CB Universidad de Burgos (4-0) is placed first. So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. De Assis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.3ppg, 8.3rpg, 2.3apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 66.7%(28-42), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 72.7% in four games. De Assis is another player who holds two passports: Angolan and Spanish. He is also a member of the Angolan senior national team.

Valdelicio Joaquim

   #4. Center Valdelicio Joaquim (208-90, also represented by Duran International, college: Hawaii, currently plays in France) contributed to a 2-point Quimper UJAP's victory against the closely-ranked Gries/Oberhoffen (1-3) 98-96 in the French ProB (second division) in Saturday night's game. Joaquim recorded 16 points and blocked 2 shots. Quimper UJAP (1-3) is placed 14th in the ProB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. It's Joaquim's first season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 12.3ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.3bpg. Joaquim used to play for the Angolan national team last year.

Antonio Monteiro

   #5. Former international forward Antonio Monteiro (204-89, currently plays in Portugal). Monteiro could not help FC Porto (2-3) to beat Benfica (3-3). He scored only 4 points in 8 minutes on the court. FC Porto lost 88-93 on the road to the higher-ranked (#6) Benfica. It was FC Porto's third consecutive loss in a row. This year Monteiro's overall stats are: 4.0ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.5apg in four games. He has both Angolan and Portuguese nationalities. Monteiro used to play for the Angolan national team four years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Angolan passport but never been selected to any of Angolan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Sergio Correia (198-F-85, currently plays in Portugal) could not help Imortal (1-4) in their last game. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked Imortal was edged 87-84 on the road by the much higher-ranked (#3) Esgueira / Oli. Correia scored 10 points in 33 minutes. This year Correia's overall stats are: 8.0ppg and 4.2rpg in five games he played so far.

   #2. Benedito Suca (196-F-84, currently plays in Portugal) was the major contributor in Academia's victory against the sixth-ranked Ginasio (1-1) 97-87 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) on Sunday night. He scored 20 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). Academia do Lumiar Lisboa (1-1) is placed fifth in South group. Suca is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his eighth year in Academia's roster. Suca has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.5ppg and 3.5rpg.

   #3. Edson Ferreira (183-G-86, currently plays in Portugal) managed to help Electrico FC to win against the eighth-ranked Angrabasket (0-3) 80-71 in the Portuguese Proliga (second division) last Saturday. He scored only 2 points. It was his first game for Electrico FC this season. His team is placed third in South group.

   #4. Silvio Mateus (185-G-94, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Koeln Rh.Stars in their game against Coburg (2-5) in the German ProB (third division). Mateus recorded only 4 points in 21 minutes. The 11th-placed Koeln Rh.Stars (1-6) was crushed 102-78 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked (#9) Coburg in the South group. This year Mateus' total stats are: 9.7ppg, 2.4rpg and 2.0apg in seven games. He has a dual citizenship: Angolan and French.

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Angolans who are currently playing abroad. This week's number one is an experienced international guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International). He could not help Mens Sana 1871 (5-3) in their last game. Despite Morais' very good performance the fifth-placed Mens Sana 1871 (5-3) lost 73-85 on the road to the lower-ranked (#10) Givova Scafati in the West group.    [read more]

FIBA launches first African League - 30 days ago
The International Basketball Federation FIBA- Africa will hold the 1st African Junior Basketball League in 2019, announced Thursday in Luanda the Angolan Basketball Federation's secretary general, Nelson Sardinha.
