The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Helmarc - Comercio e Industria, a major real estate development company in Angola, last Saturday announced a partnership to launch the first Junior NBA Angola League, an after-school basketball league for Angolan boys and girls ages 14 and under.

The league, sponsored by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, tipped off Saturday, June 2 at Pavilhao Multiusos do Kilamba, a state-of-the-art, multipurpose indoor arena in Luanda, with Bismack Biyombo (Orlando Magic; Democratic Republic of the Congo) in attendance and some performance from the Chicago Bulls Dunk Team.

The Junior NBA Angola League will feature 30 boys and girls' school teams competing for the league championship in July. Each school team will represent one of the 30 NBA teams and will receive corresponding NBA team-branded jerseys for their games. Ford is the sponsor of the league while Helmarc is the implementing partner and will provide the Junior NBA League with the use of Pavilhao Multiusos do Kilamba that will host games during the inaugural season.

'We are excited to partner with Ford Motor Company and Helmarc to launch our first Junior NBA League in Angola,' said NBA Vice President and Managing Director for Africa, Amadou Gallo Fall. 'We experienced firsthand the passion for the game of basketball in Angola when we held our Basketball Without Borders Africa camp in Luanda in 2016. We look forward to continuing to grow the game with our partners during the league's first season and beyond.'

'It is very important to develop activities with communities, and most importantly with children, through sport,' said Carlos Cerqueira, Robert Hudson CEO. 'Basketball is a cherished sport in Angolan society and with the support of the NBA we have managed to reach an even broader target audience and get the attention of more people for this action.

'Helmarc is proud to once again partner with the NBA to hold the first Junior NBA League in Angola. Angola is a powerhouse in African basketball and we are honored to have the NBA to help us with the continued growth of the game and development of Angola's future stars', said Helmarc CEO, Helder Cruz.

The Junior NBA, the league's global youth basketball program for boys and girls, teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game, teamwork, respect, determination and community at the grassroots level in an effort to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents. During the 2017-18 season, the NBA will reach more than 26 million youth in 71 countries through a variety of camps, clinics, skills challenges, league play and outreach events.

Similar to the NBA, teams will be divided into two conferences. The Junior NBA Angola League's regular season will run through June, with the top eight teams from each conference qualifying for the playoffs. The top two teams from each conference will then meet in the championship game in July to determine the first Junior NBA Angola League champion.

Leveraging the excitement of the NBA, the league will also promote shared values of teamwork, leadership, fitness and healthy living through competitive league play and Junior NBA youth clinics.

The NBA has a long history in Africa with 12 African-born players featured on NBA rosters at the start of the 2017-18 season. The Junior NBA Angola League is the 15th Junior NBA program on the continent and builds on the existing Junior NBA programs in Cameroon, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Tanzania, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda.
