Petro de Luanda reinforced their status as Angola's basketball powerhouse by capturing the 48th edition of the Taca de Angola with a commanding 98-80 victory over Interclube in the final at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion on Friday, April 10. The triumph gives Petro their 16th Cup title — breaking the record they had shared with rivals Primeiro de Agosto at 15 apiece since last year's triumph — and secures the club's place in the upcoming edition of the Supertaca Wladmiro Romero. The final was a rematch of the 2024 edition of the competition, but this time Petro left no room for doubt. The Eixo Viario club's depth and firepower overwhelmed Interclube across four quarters, building a lead that the black-and-whites could never seriously threaten despite a strong individual effort from their top scorer. Malian forward
Aboubacar Gakou (201-F-1997) led Petro with 16 points in a balanced offensive display that saw contributions across the roster. Interclube's
Emanuel Sebastiao (190-G-2001) was the game's leading scorer with 22 points, but his efforts were not enough to overcome Petro's collective dominance on both ends of the floor. Petro's path to the final showcased their depth across two squads. In the semifinals, the senior team dispatched Petro B 108-57 in a one-sided affair, while in the quarterfinals they had earlier cruised past Interclube B 99-65. Interclube earned their place in the final the hard way, edging Primeiro de Agosto 89-83 in a tense semifinal that underlined the competition's unpredictability below the very top. The tournament also produced one of its most memorable storylines in the earlier rounds when Sporting Clube de Luanda B stunned their own senior team 71-69 in the quarterfinals, earning a shock semifinal berth against Petro. Meanwhile, Primeiro de Agosto had delivered the most emphatic performance of the competition with a 153-point demolition of Vila Clotilde in the quarterfinals.
For Petro de Luanda, the Cup title adds to an extraordinary run of domestic silverware. The club is the reigning six-time consecutive Angolan league champion and last season completed the national treble (league, cup and super cup). They have also been a force on the continental stage, reaching back-to-back Basketball Africa League finals in 2024 and 2025 — winning the first and falling to Al Ahli Tripoli in the second. Petro are set to compete in the 2026 BAL season, which tipped off its Kalahari Conference group phase in Pretoria, South Africa on March 27. The 2026 Taca de Angola cements Petro de Luanda's position at the summit of Angolan basketball — a programme that shows no signs of relinquishing its grip on the country's domestic game.
