President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Tijjani Umar, has assured that the national men basketball team, D'Tigres, will successfully defend its All Africa Games (AAG) title it won in Mozambique four years ago.
It would be recalled that D'Tigers defeated host, Mozambique, 62-57 to win the men basketball event of the 10th All Africa Games in 2011 after dispatching giants, Angola, 62-56 in the semi final.
Speaking to the media in Abuja at the weekend, the NBBF boss expressed hope that D'Tigers, with its new coach, would excel at the event, which comes up in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, from September 4 to 20.
'We are very optimistic of the chances of Nigeria. You know they are the defending champions of the All Africa Games.
'Nigeria will retain the title; there is no two ways about it. We will win. There is a high spirit in camp and the players are very much aware of the task before them.'
Umar also lauded the just-concluded women league which has a new champions in Dolphins basketball club of Lagos, thumping up both DStv and Zenith Bank for the continous sponsorship of the the men and women leagues.
'We have to give kudos to our sponsors. They have done well and the league season went on fine. All we will ask is that they should still help us in any other area they can for us to further develop the game of basketball in Nigeria.'
