Here is the weekly review of the top performing Algerian players, who play currently abroad.
#1. This week's number one is an international point guard
Samir Mekdad (191-86, currently plays in France). He was the major contributor in a
STB Le Havre's victory against the seventh-ranked JSA Bordeaux (4-2)
88-73 in the French NM1 (third division) in Friday night's game.
Mekdad scored 17 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 39 minutes on the court.
STB Le Havre (4-2) is placed third in Group B.
It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row.
But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen.
Mekdad has relatively good stats this year: 12.7ppg, 3.2rpg, 3.5apg, 2FGP: 46.2%, 3FGP: 39.4% and FT: 68.4% in six games he played so far.
He has a dual citizenship: Algerian and French.
Mekdad played for the Algerian senior national team one years ago.
#2. Second place goes to an international power forward
Mehdi Cheriet (204-87, college:
San Diego St., currently plays in France). He contributed to an easy victory against the 13th-ranked Aubenas (0-6) crushing them
82-61 in the French NM1 (third division) last Saturday.
Cheriet scored 7 points.
SO Maritime Boulogne (2-4) is placed ninth in Group A.
But the season just started, so everything may happen.
This year Cheriet averages: 6.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 47.6%, 3FGP: 25.0%.
He is another player who holds two passports: Algerian and French.
Despite Cheriet played previously for the French U20 national team, he played also for the Algerian national team in 2017.
#3. The Algerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard
Faycal Sahraoui (186-79, currently plays in France). Sahraoui led
La Rochelle to a 1-point victory against the sixth-ranked Union Tours (4-2)
78-77 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game.
He scored 14 points and added 5 passes.
Stade Rochelais Basket (3-3) is placed eighth in Group B.
But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go.
It's Sahraoui's eighth season with the team.
Sahraoui's overall stats this year are: 8.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 5.8apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 55.6%(15-27), 3FGP: 12.5% and FT: 82.4%.
Similarly like Cheriet and Mekdad above he has both Algerian and French nationalities.
Sahraoui played for the Algerian national team three years ago.
#4. Shooting guard
Karim Atamna (196-80, currently plays in France) could not help
Aix-Maurienne (1-1) in their last game. Despite his good performance Aix-Maurienne was crushed
89-62 on the road by the second-ranked Entente Orleans 45.
Atamna was the second best scorer with 10 points in 30 minutes.
Atamna is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Aix-Maurienne's roster.
This season he has relatively solid stats: 13.5ppg, 3.0rpg and 3.5apg in two games.
Similarly like three previous players above, Atamna also holds two passports: Algerian and French.
He used to play for the Algerian national team
back in 2007.
One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Algerian passport: #1. Chej Ainatu (191-G/F-91, currently plays in Spain) led
Ardoi to a victory over the eighth-ranked Pas Pielagos (1-1) crushing them
85-59 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) on Sunday night.
Ainatu was MVP of the game. He recorded 17 points, 5 assists and 4 steals in 24 minutes. It was his first game for Ardoi this season.
His team is placed first in Group A-A.
But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen.
It's Ainatu's first year with the team.
