Mali top Senegal to claim title in Cairo - Dec 9, 2020

Mali defended their U18 AfroBasket title. They nipped Senegal in the championship game in Cairo tonight. Bourama Coulibaly (190-G-02) sank two free throws late in regulation to seal the win and the trophy for Mali. He finished with 21 points for the champions. Senegal grabbed a 23-16 lead after the first period. But Mali unloaded 51 points in the next two quarters to secure an 11-point lead at the final intermission. Senegal denied the deficit in the fourth term and tied things up at 80. But Mali had the last word in this one as Coulibaly sealed the win. N'Tio Diarra (200-F-02) provided 20 points and 16 rebounds for Mali. Khalifa Diop (211-C-02) and Babacar Sane (03) answered with 18 points each for Senegal.
3-4 Place
Egypt - Guinea 72-55
Egypt stepped onto the pedestal in Cairo. They toppled Guinea in the consolation final today. Mohab Abdalatif (02) provided 29 points and 9 rebounds in the victory. Egypt jumped off to a great start. They built a 25-6 lead ten minutes into the game. Guinea managed to pull within 8 points at the final break. But Egypt held their opponents to only 5 points in the fourth quarter and raced to the victory. Malek Abdelgowad (02) added 13 points and 12 boards for Egypt. Ousmane Kaba (191-SG-02) responded with 18 points for Guinea.

Senegal and Mali to clash for title in Cairo - Dec 8, 2020
Senegal - Guinea 52-39
Senegal thumped Guinea to enter the championship game in Cairo. Guinea jumped to an 18-9 lead after the first period. But Senegal held their opponents to just 12 points in the next two periods to take a 7-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Senegal went on a decisive 15-9 rally in the final period to seal the win. Khalifa Diop (211-C-02) finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists for Senegal. Babacar Sane (03) and Pape Ablaye Sow (203-F-03) added 10 points each for Senegal. Mambourou Mara (194-F-03) replied with 15 points for Guinea.

Egypt - Mali 70-79
Mali upset the tournament's favourites Egypt in the semifinal clash in Cairo tonight. Tamandjan Youba (02) scored 20 points to pace the winners. Egypt enjoyed a 17-16 lead after the opening quarter. But Mali went on a 26-11 run in the second quarter to ensure a 42-28 halftime lead. Mali stretched the margin at 17 points heading into the fourth quarter. Egypt managed to narrow the distance in the final frame but could not escape the loss. Abdramane Kanoute (04) delivered 12 points for Mali. Mohab Abdalatif (02) answered with 21 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds for Egypt.

Semifinal stage is set in Cairo - Dec 6, 2020
Senegal - Guinea 55-53
Senegal nipped Guinea to finish in the second place in group stage. The teams will meet again in the semifinal clash on Tuesday. Ibou Dianko Badji (218-C-02) scored 19 points and 20 rebounds to pace the winners. Babacar Sane (03) added 12 points for Senegal. Guinea sank 24 points in the third term to take an 8-point lead at the final break. Senegal however limited their opponents to just 6 points in the fourth frame to snatch the win. Mambourou Mara (194-F-03) answered with 23 points for Guinea.

Egypt - Mali 77-61
Egypt kept their record perfect heading into the semifinal stage in Cairo. They edged Mali to claim the third straight win. Mohamed Elmansy (02) stepped up with 17 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. Egypt and Mali were tied at 32 at the big break. But Egypt went on a 25-12 run in the third quarter to clear off for good. Abdullah Ahmed (205-C-03) produced 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Tamandjan Youba (02) answered with 17 points for Mali.

Guinea and Egypt victorious in Cairo - Dec 5, 2020
Guinea - Mali 63-60
Guinea held off Mali for the first victory at U18 AfroBasket. Mali secured a 34-27 halftime lead. They stretched the lead to 8 points at the final intermission. But Guinea responded with a strong 20-9 run in the fourth quarter to steal the victory. Ousmane Kaba (191-SG-02) produced 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, while Mambourou Mara (194-F-03) added 11 points for Guinea. Tamandjan Youba (02) answered with 19 points for Mali.

Senegal - Egypt 65-75
Egypt registered the second consecutive win in Cairo. The hosts toppled Senegal to stay undefeated. Mohab Abdalatif (02) stepped up with 31 points and 7 rebounds for Egypt. Moamen Abouzeid (186-G-03) added 10 points for the winners. Egypt jumped off to a 28-9 lead after the first period and never looked back en route to the victory. Pierre Sene (201-F-03) replied with 14 points and 8 rebounds for Senegal.

Egypt beats Guinea in the opener - Dec 4, 2020
Egypt - Guinea 68-60

Egypt beats Guinea 68-60 in U18 African Championship opener. The hosts recovered from a slow start to seal the win in Day 1. Guinea grabbed a 19-12 lead at the start of the game to surprise the home side. Egypt needed a 21-15 run in the second period and then took control in the second half.
Mohab Abdalatif (02) was unstoppable with 42 points and 7 rebounds. Moamen Abouzeid (186-G-03) netted 7 and Saifeldeen Moustafa (192-G-02) as well as Malek Abdelgowad (02) brought 5 each. Mambourou Mara (194-F-03) replied with 28 points in a loss, whilst Kabinet Kaba (198-F-03) and N'Famara Dabo (203-PF-04) scored 9 apiece.

Senegal claimed the first win at U18 AfroBasket. They toppled Mali in Cairo to open win count. Babacar Sane stepped up with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the effort.
Senegal sank 23 points in the opening quarter to open a 6-point lead. They maintained the pressure throughout the second quarter. Senegal established a 45-35 halftime lead. Mali cut the distance to 9 points in the third term. They poured in 26 points in the fourth stanza but came up just short of win at the end. Khalifa Diop (211-C-02) produced 17 points and 17 rebounds for the winners. Bourama Coulibaly (190-G-02) answered with 19 points, 8 assists and 6 boards for Mali.

The start of competitions shifted - Dec 1, 2020
The women's and men's Afrobasket U18 which was due to start on December 1, 2020 in Cairo (Egypt) has finally been postponed. Thus in boys, the competition will be held from December 3 to 9, while in girls, it will be from December 5 to 9. This is due to the withdrawal of some countries. The exact list of participating nations is still unknown for the time being.
