ZAMBIA has qualified for the 27th edition of the men's 2013 African Basketball Nations Championships (AfroBasket) championships slated for August in Ivory Coast despite losing the final Zone Six qualifiers to hosts Mozambique at the weekend. The last time Zambia played at such a competition was back in 1989 at the finals hosted in Angola where the team finished second. Zambia qualified for the finals by virtue of having reached the finals of the week-long championships held in Maputo that saw four countries taking part. Botswana and the Seychelles were the two sides that took part after the withdrawal of other countries that include Malawi. Other teams that have qualified include hosts Ivory Coast, champions Tunisia, 2011 runners-up Angola and Nigeria who finished third at the last edition. Burkina Faso are Zone Three winners, Morocco and Algeria as Zone One and runner-up with Senegal and Cape Verde qualifying as Zone Two winners and runner-up respectively. Central Africa Republic, Cameroun and Congo are from the Zone Four qualifiers. Egypt and Rwanda sailed through from the Zone Five qualifiers with Mozambique and Zambia making the 16 member teams to compete at the event that starts on August 21 in Abidjan. Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) technical director George Sikalumbi said in an interview yesterday that International Basketball Federation (FIBA) wrote to the association on Friday informing them of the development. "Actually the final game against Mozambique was in some way a preparatory game for the FIBA finals to be held in Ivory Coast. "I think we need to sit down and strategise how best to prepare our team for the championships," he said. ZBA president Boniface Kambikambi has expressed happiness at the team's qualification to the AfroBasket championship. The team was expected back home last night. MAVERICK Matero Magic kept up with its bullish mood by sweeping aside military teams during the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) national championship play-offs played at the National Sports development Centre (NASDEC). Tasked to fend off stiff competition from two military sides in the quest to reclaim the national title, Matero Magic kept their nose in front after beating Zambia Army's Green Buffaloes and then Zambia National Services (ZNS)'s Green Eagles. First up for the Lovemore 'Potterfield' Sikaale coached Matero Magic was fierce rivals Green Buffaloes, who they fought tooth and nail to eventually beat 80-72 in an enthralling match that could have passed for a play-offs final. Then after subduing Green Buffaloes, their magic went into another spellbinding match, this time against another ZNS team in Green Eagles whom they overpowered to take the game with a much tighter 66-62 scoreline. For the Zambia Army teams in the basketball league it was a bad outing especially that the Green Buffaloes women team went on courts against the UNZA Honeys losing 62-58. As the Zambia Army teams were licking their wounds on day one, the University of Zambia teams were on cloud nine as the male team (UNZA Pacers) recorded an easy 67-49 victory over the Mazabuka Comets in a lope sided match. The championship continues this weekend. Courtesy of: http://basket-in-africa.blogspot.com

ELEVEN days before Zambia hosts the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six Youth Games, basketball and boxing coaches have complained of lack of proper training equipment.
This came to light when Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) board members toured the swimming pool at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) where the national under-20 teams are training from.
Basketball coach, Cuthbert Tembo alleged that the new balls that were bought for the games were still being kept at the Ministry of Sport instead of giving the teams to use during training, saying it was difficult in basketball to use new balls, but used ones.
Boxing manager Gibson Kasonde said the issue of lack of training equipment has been on-going and feared that it might affect the performance of athletes during the games."It's like all sporting disciplines do not have the equipment. The Paralympics have no wheelchairs, boxers have not pads and scale and I am afraid this can affect the performance of the athletes," Kasonde said.
SCZ vice-chairperson Mwamba Kalenga who led the entourage said the equipment would be released before the games start as it was every Zambian's wish to see the athletes haul as many medals as possible and urged athletes to repay Government's gesture by winning medals.
"Government has invested a lot in camping you and hosting of these games and it would be important that you repay by winning medals during the games," Kalenga said as he addressed athletes earlier.
Kalenga was in the company of other board members who included Smart Mwitwa, Elliot Mhende, Max Sichula, newly appointed member Haroon Ghumra, Annie Mwape and general secretary Mann Muchimba. Courtesy of: Times of Zambia
