Uganda's Basketball Club City Oilers successfully defended their Zone V Basketball Cup, a title they had won last year in Tanzania. Oilers reached this fate with an enormous victory that saw them defeat Rwanda's Patriots 86-59 in a final played at a sold out MTN Indoor Arena in Lugogo. Jordin Mayers was the starman of the day, putting up 16 points before the long break an adding on other 5 points in the following quarters to notch a game high tally of 21 points. Adarius Pegues who received marching orders in the semis, put up an improved performance highlighted with a double double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Oilers showed it from the start that they were determined to defend their title when they went 8-0 in the lead but the Patriots showed that they were not to go down easily with Juruni's side edging the first quarter 22-20. Amidst cheers from the crowd, the defending Champions scored 26 points and restricted their opponents to 18 points in the second quarter to take a 10 point lead at the long break (48-38). The Patriots looked to be crueless with everything going wrong for their side as star players Kami Kabange and Hamza Ruhezamihigo (193-F/G-85) continued to fire blanks and eventually trailed by 18 points going into the last 10 minutes. In the last quarter, the Oilers slowed the game's tempo as they were totally in the driving seat , posting more 17 points to later seal off an 86-59 victory. Patriots' Aristide Mugabe (183-PG-88) and Elie Kaje (195-G-95) collected 17 and 11 points respectively in their losing effort. The victory means that City Oilers will once again represent the Zone V category to the FIBA 2017 Africa Basketball cup. City Oilers were the reigning Champions prior to this tournament, the Ugandan side had defeated Kenya's Ulinzi stars 72-49 in Dar es Salaam last year.
