Power, Our Saviour braced for decider - Nov 4, 2016

Our Saviour basketball club takes on Power tonight at the YMCA courts in Wandegeya in a decisive Game Three, with a semifinal berth to face KIU Titans at stake. When Our Saviour blitzed past Power 60-53 last Friday in Lugogo to level their best-of-three quarterfinal series at one-all, it was the first play-off win they had registered in the top-flight league. Last year, Our Saviour suffered a clean (0-2) sweep at the hands of UCU Canons. And considering that Power had stream-rolled Our Saviour 84-57 in game one of this series, they looked gone. However, their captain Steven Mwesige inspired a fightback with a game-high 21 points against Power, and remains optimistic of completing the revival tonight. Mwesige said: 'To stop Power, we just needed not to be afraid, and to have more fight than them. On top of that, we tactically had to get it right by stopping their running game.' It was that mentality that Our Saviour had for much of the first round, yet less in the second round, following the departure of their coach Moo Holmes. Then, they won seven successive games from the opening day, including major scalps as UCU Canons, Falcons and Warriors, thanks to Mwesige's efficiency. He has averaged 14 points per game. It is on such basis that would deserve mention for the MVP gong. But that will not divert Mwesige from his pre-season target of making it into the semifinal play-offs.

Now, it's the Silverbacks to take the lesson as they seek to finish among the top two for a second successive appearance at the Afrobas...   [read more]
