Oilers Confront Vulnerable Rhino - Jun 23, 2016

Jimmy Enabu
Charging Rhino have always done just enough to keep their place in the National Basketball League since their return in 2013, a season in which they also reached the playoffs. They, however, need to start winning soon if they are to maintain that record going into their game against City Oilers at YMCA this evening. The 1997 champions sit at the foot of the topflight log with a 0-6 record having started the season with six straight defeats. Three of those defeats to Destiny Phenoms, UPDF Tomahawks and Sharing Youth have come against the teams expected to be direct rivals in the fight against drop. City Oilers on the other have hardly been required to engage the second gear in five of their six games so far. They were only stretched in the 73-72 narrow win over UCU Canons. The reigning champions, for whom Jimmy Enabu (183-G-88) and Kami Kabange (201-F/C) are averaging 18 and 15 points respectively, are expected to improve their season run to 7-0 with a comfortable win tonight. Against the stuttering Rhino, coach Mandy Juruni could also give more minutes to role players such as Brian Sentongo (203-F/C-86), Andrew Opio and Kakuru Adam.

28-year old Mickeal Makiadi (199-C/F-89) had a very impressive game in the last round for second-ranked Power and receives a Afrobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 20. He had a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds, while his team beat Ndejje (#6, 5-4) 88-81. Power is placed at 2nd position in Ugandan league. They are still close to the very top. Power would have been even better if they kept winning the games like in the last round. They have a solid 8-2 record. Makiadi h...   [read more]
