Last year in January, Startimes took over the naming rights of record six time champions Falcons, in a three year partnership worth Shs250m. The partnership, both parties envisaged would propel the most successful side on the domestic basketball scene to greater heights. "As record champions we have always strived to be at the forefront of basketball's growth," Falcons' Club Chairman, Friday Kagoro said then. 18 months on, the desired effect has not really materialized. They failed to improve on the previous season's playoff quarterfinal exit after going down 2-1in their series against Power at the same stage lasts season. This season has seen them start with a 1-4 run with the only bright spot being Sunday's 56-49 defeat of new comers Destiny Phenoms. This was on the back of the departures of coach Sam Obol, players,Caesar Kizito and Isaac Afidra while Kenyan centre Ariel Okall is yet to report back. Off the court, the picture has been as grim with the team's fans forced into a fundraising drive on social media to keep the team afloat. And despite picking their maiden win this season, Falcons who dominated the domestic scene in the late 1990's and the start of the century will start as underdogs this evening against UCU Canons. Last season's finalists are coming off the back of a gut wrenching 73-72 defeat to champions City Oilers. The defeat was the second for the Nick Natuhereza coached Canons who have made a 3-2 start to the season. Courtesy of: monitor.co.ug
