After unveiling six new players on Friday, Pemba Warriors president, Ambrose Tashobya, flanked by the club's maverick sponsor, Jack Pemba, set a top-two finish as their season target for the two-time champions. After another offseason spending spree of their own, KIU Titans were also expected to show strides made to challenge City Oilers' march to a fourth straight national basketball league title. KIU though got a taste of how hard it will be to dethrone this oiled machine after they were easily dispatched 76-59 in front of a fair crowd on the opening night of the season at the Lugogo MTN Arena on Friday. "First, I told players this was the worst game we would play this season seeing as we had many new faces. We were also playing against a team that has been together for a while now," KIU coach Hamza Nyambogo said of his team's display. They started brightly and matched the Oilers in the first quarter before a 9-0 run by the champions gave them a 36-27 lead. Kami Kabange (201-F/C) made two jumpers in that period for a total of 17 points, a performance bettered by Landry Ndikumana's 19 and seven rebounds while Jimmy Enabu (183-G-88) added 15 for the Oilers. Enabu's three pointer then precipitated a 20-7 charge as the Oilers pulled away in the final three minutes to triumph.
