The second edition of the Kampala International University (KIU) Invitational tournament takes place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at the KIU main campus in Kasanga, with eight teams competing for top honours. Being a precursor to the 2016 Fuba league tip-off, the tournament has created anxiety in the local basketball fraternity as fans yearn for a sneak preview of what to expect from the participating teams in the season ahead, writes FELIX EUPAL. Last year, KIU Titans' general manager Nasser Sserunjogi broke the bank so that his team could win its maiden championship. He hired a new coach in Hamza Nyambogo, signed the Blick brothers Norman and Donald, brought in centre Henry Malinga (196-C/F-79), and forward Geoffrey Soro. Like a kid who just has got a new toy car, Sserunjogi was eager to take it for a test run. As such, the KIU Invitational was born, and fortunately, the Titans won the tournament after beating league-defending champions, City Oilers. In the league, KIU Titans looked like a formidable force on paper bound to upset many. However, they couldn't get past UCU Canons in the semifinals. This year, the Titans are making another run for the title. And to do so, they have added on the services Tanzanian point-guard Sudi Ulanga, from Power. Ulanga's pairing with Chris Omanye (183-PG-94) and Francis Sokoroza (191-F/G-85) means the Titans will boast the best back court in the league. They have also brought onboard Chris Kyebambe (188-G-78) as assistant to coach Nyambogo. However, they are still thin on the front court, with Henry Malinga struggling for form and age catching up on him. Soro is also a shadow of his former self, having spent more time warming the bench last season.

Uganda 90-72 Iraq: Silverbacks off to a winning start at Molten Istanbul Cup - 2 days ago
