Joas Maheta scored 18 points and took 10 rebounds to help Savio down Vijana 'City Bulls' 58-47 to win the Ilala District Basketball 2014 League title at the Don Bosco ground in Dar es Salaam over the weekend. Savio, who successfully defended the title they won last year, avenged their 79-16 first leg defeat to Vijana at the Zanaki Secondary School ground in Dar es Salaam a week before. With a quality offensive in the final match Savio took a dismal 12-11 lead in the first quarter before widening it to 21-19 at the breather.
They were 37-28 up in the third quarter and went wild in the final quarter to add 21 points against their rivals' 19 to win the thrilling encounter. Other top contributors for Savio included Mohamed Yusuph with 10 points and Romanus Anania with 8 points. Mopero Baraka scored 18 points for Vijana, while team mates Jacob Marenga (178-G-84) and Anthony Jekang hit 15 and 8 points respectively. The defeat means Vijana will have to wait until next year to end Savio's dominance. The league that was played over two legs at two different grounds -- Zanaki Secondary School and Don Bosco Youth Centre in the city -- brought together six teams. Others were Jogoo, Tanzania Prisons, Airwing and Magone. The teams are preparing for this year's National Basketball League (NBL) scheduled to kick off this weekend.
