It all boiled down to the wire in the ICSL 2013 top four play-offs, with Good Fellas Basketball and Braamfontein Blues defeating Jozi Nuggets and Egoli Magic respectively on Friday night at the prestigious Mandeville Indoor Centre. Good Fellas had out-played and out-rebounded their way to the final by defeating Jozi Nuggets 84 - 68 earlier in the evening in a match that was very physical and resulted in a lot of injuries. It was a tough night for the Nuggets who had to give up the game with almost 30secs left on the clock.
The 2nd semi final match of the night was however more entertaining and nail biting. The Blues had taken the lead early in the game, and forcing Egoli Magic to play catch up for all the way to the last 5 minutes of 4th quarter when Braam Blues finally broke away with vital 3 points shots from Tshiamo Ngakana and Judd Simankov and additional 2 points field goals to move the game beyond Egoli's reach. And eventually winning 74 - 58. Jono was spectacular in the paint, grabbing valuable rebounds and being very aggressive under the rim.
This defeat makes one wonder about Egoli's statue as a Basketball powerhouse in South Africa. It goes on to confirm the popular opinion that for Egoli Magic to be a serious contender in the proposed National Basketball League (NBL), they will need to revamp their roster. Egoli will have to recruit younger and more athletic players than they currently have. The current roster seems dilapidated and simply cannot compete against the caliber of teams that they will meet in the NBL in less than 4 months.
Kudos must go though to the Braamfontein Blues Basketball team who without their star player and the league's top scorer Edgar Tifo managed to put up an outstanding performance by defeating a 'powerhouse' team and qualifying for the finals of its flagship event where rampant Good Fellas will be waiting.
