Gorgui Dieng's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Senegalese players playing currently abroad: - Mar 11, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Senegalese players who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Gorgui Dieng (211-90, college: Louisville, currently plays in NBA). He could not help the Minnesota Timberwolves (27-37) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Dieng's good performance the Minnesota Timberwolves (27-37) were defeated 97-90 on the road by the San Antonio Spurs. He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. Dieng also added 4 assists. It's Dieng's fourth season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 10.1ppg, 7.9rpg, 1.8apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 51.3%, 3FGP: 35.5% and FT: 77.6%. Dieng is currently a member of the Senegalese senior national team.

Hassino Ndoye

   #2. Second place goes to former U18 international center Hassino Ndoye (92, currently plays in Qatar). Ndoye was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Al Gharafa (16-2) in their last game on Friday. Despite his good performance Al Gharafa was defeated 74-65 in a derby game by the leading El Jaysh. Ndoye scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. This season Ndoye averages: 9.4ppg, 3.2rpg, 1.9apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 45.3%, 3FGP: 26.9% and FT: 72.7%. He played for the Senegalese U18 national team in 2008.

Moussa Diagne

   #3. The Senegalese player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Moussa Diagne (211-94, currently plays in Euroleague). He was not able to secure a victory for FC Barcelona (10-15) in their game against CSKA (19-6) in the Euroleague. Diagne scored 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 16 minutes. FC Barcelona was crushed 85-61 at home by the second-ranked CSKA. This year Diagne's overall stats are: 3.8ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 57.1% and FT: 58.3% in four games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Senegalese and Spanish. Worth to mention Diagne played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Diagne is also a member of the Senegalese senior national team.

Youssou Ndoye

   #4. Center Youssou Ndoye (213-91, college: St.Bonaventure, currently plays in France) led JL Bourg to a victory against the 15th-ranked Chorale de Roanne (9-13) 76-70 in the French ProB (second division) on Friday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 13 rebounds. Ndoye also added 2 blocks; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. JL Bourg Basket (16-6) is placed first in the ProB. It's Ndoye's first year with the team. This season Ndoye has relatively solid stats: 13.2ppg, 9.3rpg, 1.1apg and 1.2bpg. He is also Senegalese national team player.

Mamadou Diouf

   #5. An experienced former international swingman Mamadou Diouf (197-77, college: Delaware, currently plays in Japan) was the major contributor in a Toshiba Thunders' victory against the sixth-ranked Sendai 89ers (11-31) 91-86 in the Japanese B League last Friday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting the same number of rebounds. Toshiba Brave Thunders Kanagawa (37-6) is placed first in Central group. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Diouf has been at the team for five years. Diouf's total stats this season are: 6.8ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.5apg. He used to play for the Senegalese national team ten years ago.

Power forward Ousmane Barro (207-84, college: Marquette, currently plays in Romania) contributed to an UBT Cluj Napoca's victory against the sixth-ranked Pitesti (10-11) 94-84 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Wednesday night. Barro scored 16 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 23 minutes. U-Banca Transilvania Cluj Napoca (18-2) is placed first in Places 1-6 group. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. It's Barro's first season with the team. He has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 7.3rpg and 1.5apg in 21 games. Barro is a former U18 international player as he played for the Senegalese team fifteen years ago.

International center Abdoulaye Ndoye (207-95, currently plays in Spain) contributed to Gipuzkoa's victory against the ninth-ranked Lleida Basquet (15-12) 71-65 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Friday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 16 rebounds. RETAbet Gipuzkoa BC San Sebastian (18-8) is placed first in the LEB Gold. Ndoye's total stats this season are: 5.7ppg and 4.5rpg. He is also Senegalese national team player.

Center Aziz N'Diaye (213-88, college: Washington, currently plays in Japan) led Dragonflies to a victory over the fourth-ranked Aomori Watts (18-25) 82-74 in the Japanese B League D2 last Sunday. N'Diaye was MVP of the game. He scored 17 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 21 minutes. Hiroshima Dragonflies (34-9) are placed second in West group. This year N'Diaye's total stats are: 9.0ppg, 7.2rpg and 1.3bpg in 26 games. He used to play for the Senegalese national team back in 2007.

Former international power forward Pape Badji (208-92, currently plays in Belgium) contributed to Kangoeroes' victory against one of league's weakest teams Leuven Bears (6-16) 90-76 in the Belgian Euromillions League on Saturday night. Badji recorded 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Kangoeroes Basket Willebroek (12-10) is placed third in the Euromillions League. It was Kangoeroes' fourth consecutive victory in a row. Badji averaged so far 11.5ppg and 6.1rpg. He used to play for the Senegalese national team two years ago.

Point guard Clevin Hannah (179-87, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Lithuania) managed to help Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius to win against the closely-ranked Juventus (14-11) 87-85 in the Lithuanian LKL last Sunday. He recorded 5 points. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (18-8) is placed third in the LKL. Hannah has averaged so far 5.9ppg and 1.8apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Senegalese and American. Hannah is an international player who is currently on the senior Senegalese National Team roster.

   #11. Former international forward Mouhammad Faye (208-85, college: SMU, currently plays in Greece) couldn't help Promitheas in their game against AEK Athens in the Greek A1. Faye scored 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. His team was badly defeated by 19 points 86-67. He averaged so far 11.9ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.1apg. Faye used to play for the Senegalese national team two years ago.

   #12. International forward Sitapha Savane (202-78, college: Navy, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Movil Estudiantes in their game against Joventut in the Spanish Liga Endesa. He scored 6 points and blocked 2 blocks in 17 minutes. His team lost 71-77. Savane has averaged so far 5.6ppg and 3.2rpg in 21 games. He is also in the roster of the Senegalese national team.

   #13. International forward Antoine Mendy (198-83, currently plays in France) couldn't help Entente Orleans 45 in their game against Le Mans in the French ProA. Mendy scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. His team was defeated 71-64. He has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.8rpg. Mendy is also Senegalese national team player.

   #14. Former international point guard Xane d'Almeida (181-83, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in Lourdes-Tarbes' victory against the 11th-ranked Saint Vallier 89-81 in the French NM1 (third division) on Friday night. d'Almeida was the best player in that game. He had a double-double by scoring 23 points and making 11 passes. d'Almeida also added 4 rebounds in 37 minutes. His stats this year are: 14.7ppg, 4.4rpg, 7.2apg and 1.7spg in 25 games. d'Almeida used to play for the Senegalese national team back in 2015.

   #15. International center Hamady N'Diaye (213-87, college: Rutgers, currently plays in Israel) contributed to a Bnei Hasharon's victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Holon 59-55 in the Israeli Winner League last Sunday. He scored only 3 points and blocked 2 blocks in 10 minutes. N'Diaye has averaged so far 4.2ppg and 3.2rpg in five games. He is also in the roster of the Senegalese national team.


The list of other players, who all have Senegalese passport but never been selected to any of Senegalese national teams:

   #1. Amath M'Baye (206-F-89, college: Oklahoma, currently plays in Italy) led Enel Brindisi to a victory against the league outsider Vanoli Cremona (6-15) 94-82 in the Italian Serie A in Sunday night's game. He scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 31 minutes. Enel Basket Brindisi (10-11) is placed tenth in the Serie A. M'Baye has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 19.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.5apg and 1.1bpg in 21 games he played so far. M'Baye has a dual citizenship: Senegalese and French. Despite his Senegalese passport, M'Baye previously played for the French U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Senegalese team.

   #2. Ilimane Diop (210-C-95, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz in a victory against the 13th-ranked Valencia Basket (5-16) 71-63 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Sunday night. He scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 21 minutes. Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz (16-6) is placed second in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Diop has been at the team for four years. This season Diop averages: 4.0ppg and 2.8rpg in 18 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Senegalese and Spanish.

   #3. Mamadou Niang (209-C-94, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked PAOK (7-7) crushing them 80-54 in the Basketball Champions League in Wednesday night's game. Niang scored only 4 points and blocked 4 shots in 11 minutes. Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias (11-3) is placed first in group D. This year Niang's total stats are: 3.9ppg, 2.1rpg and 1.3bpg in 16 games.

   #4. Elson Mendy (200-F-85, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider CFBB (0-27) crushing them 98-52 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game. Mendy scored 10 points, grabbed 4 boards, dished 4 assists and stole 4 balls in 22 minutes. BC Souffelweyersheim (18-9) is placed third in the NM1. Mendy has averaged so far 9.0ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.6apg in 26 games.

   #5. Sidy Djitte (208-C-94, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Clemson (5-10) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Clemson lost 72-79 at home to the Duke University. Djitte had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting the same number of rebounds in 25 minutes. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Djitte plays fourth season for the team. He has averaged so far 6.5ppg and 7.6rpg in 31 games.

   #6. Mouhamed Barro (205-F-95, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the 14th-ranked CB Prat 97-79 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Saturday night's game. He scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 20 minutes. Barro has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 3.0rpg in 25 games.

   #7. Experienced Mamadou Dia (201-C/F-78, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider JA Vichy 80-63 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He scored 11 points and added 3 passes. Dia has averaged so far 9.9ppg and 2.0rpg. He has both Senegalese and French nationalities.

   #8. Papa Beye (202-F/C-89, currently plays in France) contributed to an ALM Evreux's victory against the 14th-ranked Saint Chamond 90-81 in the French ProB (second division) in Friday night's game. He recorded 10 points. Beye has averaged so far 6.3ppg and 4.3rpg.

   #9. Mamadou Samb (210-C/F-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Palencia Baloncesto's victory against the seventh-ranked Leyma Basquet 79-75 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) last Friday. Samb scored 6 points, had 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks. He averaged so far 10.4ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.2bpg. Samb also holds two passports: Senegalese and Spanish. Despite his Senegalese nationality, Samb previously played for the Spanish U20 national team and probably cannot be called to the Senegalese team.

   #10. Tacko Fall (229-C-95, currently studies in the States) helped Cent.Florida win their game against the University of Memphis crushing them 84-54 in the NCAA on Friday night. He recorded 5 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks in 16 minutes. Fall averaged so far 11.5ppg, 9.6rpg and 2.6bpg in 30 games.

Twelve years on, and Abdourahmane Ndiaye is back at the helm of Senegal men's team, the country's Basketball Federation announced. Ndiaye - for some, one of the highly-regarded Senegalese coaches - led his country to a Second-Place finish at FIBA AfroBasket 2005 and has spent most of his coaching career in France's PRO A.
