Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.


Alade Aminu

   #1. This week's number one is former international power forward Alade Aminu (207-87, agency: 3Eye, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He led his French team JSF Nanterre to a victory over the sixth-ranked Aris (4-6) crushing them 91-63 in the Basketball Champions League last Tuesday. Aminu was MVP of the game. He recorded 18 points. JSF Nanterre (7-3) is placed second in the Basketball Champions League. There are only four games left until the end of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Aminu's first season with the team. Aminu has relatively good stats this year: 11.5ppg, 5.4rpg, 2FGP: 55.8%(53-95) and FT: 69.0%. He played for the Nigerian senior national team two years ago.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

   #2. Second place goes to former international small forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Greece). Antetokounmpo contributed to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Koroivos (4-7) crushing them 92-57 in the Greek A1 on Sunday night. He scored 9 points in 21 minutes. Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens (11-0) is placed first in the A1. So far his team won all eleven games in the Regular Season. This year Antetokounmpo averages: 6.0ppg, 2.9rpg, 2FGP: 61.4%(27-44), 3FGP: 21.4% and FT: 37.5% in 11 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and Greek. Antetokounmpo played for the Nigerian national team in 2016.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in NBA). He was the major contributor in a 3-point Utah Jazz's victory against the Washington Wizards (23-18) 107-104 in the NBA last Wednesday. Udoh scored 16 points, had 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 34 minutes. The Utah Jazz has 17-24 record this season. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. This year Udoh's overall stats are: 3.2ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.2apg, 1.2bpg, 2FGP: 51.7% and FT: 76.9% in 38 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Udoh played for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

   #4. An experienced power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, college: Illinois St., currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) was the main contributor in a Le Portel's victory against the fourth-ranked Joensuun Kataja (0-2) 82-77 in the FIBA Europe Cup on Wednesday night. He was the best player in that game. Odiakosa scored 18 points. ESSM Le Portel Cote d'Opale (2-0) is placed first in group I. There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Second Stage. So now every game is very crucial. Odiakosa's total stats this season are: 5.4ppg and 4.1rpg. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team back in 2004.

   #5. International power forward Ikechukwu Diogu (204-83, college: Arizona St., currently plays in China) could not help Blue Whales (5-21) in their last game. Despite Diogu's very good performance Blue Whales were crushed 119-92 on the road by the higher-ranked (#13) Sharks. He had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 17 rebounds. Diogu also added 2 blocks in 37 minutes. Diogu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 24.3ppg and 12.0rpg in three games. Diogu has both American and Nigerian nationalities. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #6. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Atlanta Hawks (11-30) crushing them 110-89 in the NBA in Friday night's game. Aminu recorded 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. The Portland Trail Blazers have 22-19 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Aminu has relatively solid stats: 9.4ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.1apg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is also a former international player as he played for the Nigerian senior team two years ago.

Former international forward Melvin Ejim (201-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in EuroCup) contributed to a 3-point Unics Kazan's victory against the fourth-ranked Limoges CSP Elite (0-2) 69-66 in the Eurocup last Tuesday. Ejim scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 26 minutes. Unics Kazan (2-0) is placed first in group H. There are only four games left until the end of the Eurocup Top 16. So now every game will be important. This year Ejim's total stats are: 8.2ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.2apg and 1.2spg in 12 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team six years ago.

   #8. Shooting guard Bryant Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile) was not able to help Deportivo Valdivia (16-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the third-placed Deportivo Valdivia (16-10) was defeated 102-96 in Quilpue by the leading Los Leones in the Conferencia Sur. Mbamalu was the second best scorer with 23 points. He also added 5 rebounds, 3 assists and made 2 blocks. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. This season Mbamalu has very high stats. He averages: 20.0ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.9apg. Mbamalu holds both American and Nigerian passports. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.

Former international power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in VTB United League) was not able to secure a victory for Enisey (2-7) in their game against Unics Kazan (8-1) in the VTB United League. Braimoh scored 9 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists. But Enisey was defeated 91-76 in Kazan by the much higher-ranked Unics (#3). Braimoh has reliable stats this season: 10.8ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.3apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Braimoh used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

   #10. Point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Virtus Bologna (7-7) in their game against Scandone AV (11-3) in the Italian Serie A. Umeh scored 9 points in 22 minutes. But Virtus Bologna was crushed 87-59 in Avellino by the leading Scandone AV. It was Virtus Bologna's first loss after three consecutive victories. Umeh has averaged so far 8.4ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.3apg in 14 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. Former U16 international power forward Christopher Obekpa (208-93, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to Trabzonspor's surprising victory against the second-ranked Tofas 91-83 in the Turkish BSL on Saturday night. He scored 7 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and made 5 blocks in 28 minutes. Obekpa has averaged so far 8.1ppg, 6.1rpg and 2.4bpg in 14 games. He used to play for the Nigerian U16 national team ten years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Andy Ogide (204-87, agency: HMS, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Roseto Sharks (2-13) in their last game. Despite Ogide's good performance Roseto Sharks (#16) was edged 87-86 at home by the much higher-ranked (#6) Tezenis Verona in the East group. He scored 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 30 minutes. Ogide's stats this year are: 10.7ppg and 6.9rpg in 13 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #13. Former international swingman Stan Okoye (198-91, college: VMI, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Openjobmetis VA in their game against Vanoli Cremona in the Italian Serie A. Okoye cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. His team was defeated 80-72. Okoye averaged so far 14.0ppg, 7.7rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Okoye used to play for the Nigerian national team three years ago.

   #14. Former international small forward Jamal Olasewere (201-91, also represented by HMS, college: LIU Brooklyn, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help NPC Rieti (7-8) in their last game. Despite his good performance NPC Rieti (#11) was badly defeated 91-72 on their home court in Rieti by the much higher-ranked Legnano in the West group. Olasewere scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 23 minutes. Olasewere has very impressive stats this year: 17.8ppg, 8.6rpg, 2.3apg and 1.5spg in eight games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Olasewere used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #15. International center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Turkey) contributed to an Yalova Bld's shocking victory against the eighth-ranked Karesi Spor crushing them 101-68 in the Turkish TBL (second division) on Saturday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 13 rebounds. Akindele averaged so far 11.7ppg and 8.7rpg. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a victory over the Washington Wizards (23-18) 110-103 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo had a double-double by scoring 34 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added 7 assists in 41 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have 22-18 record this season. It's Antetokounmpo's fifth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 28.7ppg, 10.1rpg, 4.6apg, 1.3bpg and 1.6spg in 38 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Tonye Jekiri (213-C-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Belgium) contributed to Oostende's victory against the eighth-ranked Liege Basket (5-9) 85-73 in the Belgian Euromillions League in Friday night's game. He scored 13 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Telenet BC Oostende (14-0) is placed first in the Euromillions League. So far his team won all fourteen games in the Regular Season. Jekiri's overall stats this season are: 9.9ppg, 7.6rpg, 1.1apg and 1.2bpg.

   #3. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, agency: Alti Sport, college: Siena, currently plays in Spain) could not help Real Betis (4-11) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Anosike's very good performance the bottom-ranked Real Betis was defeated 89-82 at home by the second-ranked FC Barcelona. He was the top scorer with 22 points. Anosike also added 6 rebounds. Anosike's total stats this season are: 9.7ppg and 5.9rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #4. Retin Obasohan (185-G-93, college: Alabama, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Oettinger Rockets Gotha (4-13) in their last game. Despite Obasohan's very good performance Oettinger Rockets Gotha lost 74-80 on the road to the one of league's weakest teams (#17) Eisbaeren Bremerhaven. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Obasohan also added 8 boards, passed 4 assists and added 5 steals (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 36 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. This year Obasohan has relatively solid stats: 14.4ppg, 4.9rpg, 3.3apg and 2.1spg in 17 games. He has both Belgian and Nigerian nationalities.

   #5. Josh Okogie (193-G-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to a Georgia Tech's victory against the University of Miami, Florida (8-0) 64-54 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Okogie scored 30 points (!!!) and grabbed 9 rebounds. The Georgia Tech has conference record this season. This year Okogie has very high stats. He averages: 20.0ppg, 5.7rpg and 2.0spg. Okogie also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite his Nigerian nationality, Okogie currently plays for the USA U19 national team and is not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #6. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Turkey) managed to help Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul in a victory against the 13th-ranked Yesilgiresun Bld 80-73 in the Turkish BSL in Sunday night's game. He scored only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 17 minutes. Eric has averaged so far 7.7ppg and 4.9rpg in 14 games.

   #7. David Okeke (202-F/C-98, currently plays in EuroCup) was not able to secure a victory for Fiat TO in their game against Zenit in the Eurocup. He scored 7 points in only 12 minutes. His team lost 84-95. Okeke has averaged so far 4.6ppg and 2.3rpg in 12 games. He has Nigerian and Italian nationalities. Despite Okeke's Nigerian passport, he currently plays for the Italian U20 national team and cannot be called to the Nigerian team.

   #8. Martins Igbanu (203-F, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Tulsa in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Tulsa was crushed 104-71 on their home court in Tulsa by the University of Houston. Igbanu recorded 27 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds in 31 minutes. Igbanu has averaged so far 8.2ppg and 5.1rpg in 16 games.

   #9. Talib Zanna (206-F/C-90, agency: 3Eye, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in Israel) couldn't help Ironi Nes-Ziona (3-9) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance the bottom-ranked Ironi Nes-Ziona was badly defeated 85-69 on their home court in Nes Ziyona by the higher-ranked Hapoel Eilat (#8). Zanna was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 9 rebounds. Zanna averaged so far 14.5ppg, 8.8rpg and 1.3spg.

   #10. Stephen Domingo (201-G-95, college: California, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) helped his Dutch team Groningen win their game against the closely-ranked Keravnos crushing them 109-69 in the FIBA Europe Cup in Wednesday night's game. He scored 13 points and blocked 2 shots in 25 minutes. Domingo has averaged so far 9.6ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.4spg in eight games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Despite Domingo's Nigerian nationality, he previously played for the USA U17 national team.

Defending champion Petrochimi Bandar Imam Harbour (Superleague) inked 30-year old Nigerian ex-international power forward Gani Lawal (206-106kg-88, college: Georgia Tech). He started the season at Karesi Spor in Turkish TBL league. In 16 games he averaged impressive 16.4ppg, 9.8rpg and 1.4bpg this season. He was also selected League Player of the Week (2 times).
