Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias (Liga Endesa) strengthened their roster with addition of 32-year old Nigerian ex-international point guard Josh-Emmanuel Akognon (180-84kg-86, college: CS Fullerton). He played recently at Shanghai Sharks in Chinese CBA league. The last summer Akognon played at Henan Shedianlaojiu (NBL) in Chinese league where in 26 games he recorded very impressive stats: 38.6ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.8apg and 2.5spg (in top 5). He helped them to end the regular season as a second best team in the league. Great season indeed as he was voted to All-Chinese NBL 1st Team and All-Imports Team.
Akognon has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2014.
He was voted Big West Player of the Year back in 2009 at his college time.
Akognon also represented Nigeria at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) two years ago. His stats at that event were 5 games: 10.6ppg, 1.6rpg, 1.8apg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 40.0%.
Akognon is quite experienced player. Thanks to his pro career he managed to play on three different continents (Europe, Asia and of course North America) in eight different countries. Akognon has played previously professionally in Estonia, Italy (Banco di Srd), Lithuania (Lietuvos rytas), Serbia (Partizan), NBA (Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies), Spain (Baskonia), China (Flying Leopards, Jilin Tigers, Long Lions and Eagles) and NBA G League (Delaware 87ers).
He attended California State University, Fullerton until 2009 and it is his ninth season as a professional player.
The scouts decsribe him following way: A tiny, but solid bodied guard with personality and great scoring skills. Thanks to his explosiveness and quickness, has a good offensive presence. Can spend time in both 1 and 2 positions, gives his best in open court situations.
