Trevor Mbakwe selected the top Nigerian playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 10, 2017

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Nigerians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in Italy). He led Fiat TO to a victory against the closely-ranked Umana Venezia (5-1) 96-91 in the Italian Serie A last Sunday. Mbakwe scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Fiat Torino (5-1) is placed second in the Serie A. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Mbakwe's first year with the team. He has relatively good stats this season: 12.7ppg, 6.3rpg, 2FGP: 74.4%(32-43) and FT: 63.2%. Mbakwe has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. Despite he played previously for the USA university national team, Mbakwe played also for the Nigerian national team in 2016.

Michael Efevberha

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international guard Michael Efevberha (193-84, college: CS Northridge, currently plays in South Korea). He led Anyang KGC to a victory over the second-ranked DB Promy (7-3) crushing them 109-89 in the South Korean KBL on Saturday night. Efevberha was MVP of the game. He scored 32 points (!!!) and added 3 passes in 23 minutes. Anyang KGC (5-6) is placed seventh in the KBL. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. It's Efevberha's first year with the team. This season Efevberha has relatively solid stats: 13.9ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.8apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 59.7%(46-77), 3FGP: 18.6% in nine games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Efevberha played for the Nigerian national team in 2009.

Alade Aminu

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Alade Aminu (207-87, agency: 3Eye, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He was the major contributor in a JSF Nanterre's victory against the league outsider Telekom Baskets (1-4) crushing them 84-62 in the Basketball Champions League in Tuesday night's game. Aminu scored 14 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks. JSF Nanterre (4-1) is placed in the Basketball Champions League. Aminu has reliable stats this season: 11.7ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.1bpg, 2FGP: 55.9%(33-59) and FT: 76.2%. He played for the Nigerian national team one years ago.

   #4. Forward Melvin Ejim (201-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in VTB United League) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Tsmoki-Minsk (2-3) crushing them 91-65 in the VTB United League on Sunday night. He scored 13 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Unics Kazan (4-0) is placed second in the VTB United League. So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Ejim's stats this season are: 12.0ppg and 5.0rpg. He has both Canadian and Nigerian nationalities. Ejim used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2012.

   #5. International power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) could not help Enisey (2-3) in their last game. Despite his good performance Enisey lost 75-81 on the road to the lower-ranked (#32) Hapoel Holon. Braimoh scored 12 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 3 blocks in 22 minutes. Braimoh's stats this year are: 11.4ppg, 7.4rpg and 1.4bpg in five games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Braimoh used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #6. Shooting guard Bryant Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile) was the main contributor in a Deportivo Valdivia's victory against the fifth-ranked Osorno Basquetbol (3-9) 98-79 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Wednesday night's game. Mbamalu was the best player in that game. He scored 25 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 32 minutes. Club Deportivo Valdivia (9-4) is placed second in Conferencia Sur. It's Mbamalu's first season with the team. Mbamalu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.5ppg, 6.6rpg and 2.1apg in 11 games. Mbamalu holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.

Former U16 international power forward Christopher Obekpa (208-93, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to help Trabzonspor in their game against Anadolu Efes (4-1) in the Turkish BSL. Obekpa scored 9 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 31 minutes. But Trabzonspor lost 89-96 at home to the second-ranked Anadolu Efes. This year Obekpa's overall stats are: 9.6ppg, 9.4rpg and 3.0bpg in five games. He used to play for the Nigerian U16 national team nine years ago.

   #8. Power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Utah Jazz (5-6) in their game against the Philadelphia 76ers (6-5) in the NBA. Udoh recorded 8 points and had 3 steals in only 12 minutes. The Utah Jazz (5-6) lost 97-104 on their home court in Salt Lake City to the 76ers. It was Utah Jazz's third consecutive loss in a row. This year Udoh's total stats are: 2.2ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.1apg and 1.5bpg in 11 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Udoh used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #9. Former international center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan) contributed to Fukushima's victory against the leader Akita Happinets (12-1) 76-64 in the Japanese B2 League last Sunday. He recorded 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group East. Fukushima Firebonds (9-4) are placed second. Alabi averaged so far 13.6ppg, 9.7rpg, 1.3apg and 1.9bpg. He used to play for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #10. Power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) couldn't help Le Portel (5-3) in their game against Boulazac Basket (1-7) in the French ProA. Odiakosa scored 6 points in 17 minutes. Le Portel was edged 88-87 in Boulazac by the much lower-ranked (#16) Basket. Odiakosa has averaged so far 6.5ppg and 5.6rpg in eight games. He is a former U22 international player as thirteen years ago he still played for the Nigerian national team.

   #11. International power forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-84, college: SMU, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Usak Sportlif in their game against Sakarya BSB in the Turkish BSL. Despite his good performance last Sunday Ofoegbu scored 10 points. Ofoegbu averaged so far 13.5ppg and 5.0rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ofoegbu used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #12. International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Virtus Bologna in their game against Armani Milano in the Italian Serie A. He scored 5 points in 19 minutes. His team lost 64-72. Umeh has averaged so far 9.2ppg and 1.2rpg in six games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #13. Former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Kagawa FA in their game against Toyotsu FE in the Japanese B2 League. He scored 7 points in 16 minutes. His team lost 75-89. Kuso has averaged so far 5.9ppg and 4.0rpg in 13 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team ten years ago.

   #14. International guard Anthony Odunsi (193-92, college: Houston Baptist, currently plays in France) managed to help Caen Basket Calvados in a victory against the league outsider Charleville-Mezieres 68-61 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. Odunsi scored only 3 points in 7 minutes on the court. Odunsi has averaged so far 5.9ppg and 4.0rpg in 13 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Odunsi plays currently for the Nigerian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) could not help the Milwaukee Bucks (4-6) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Milwaukee Bucks (4-6) lost 119-124 on the road to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Antetokounmpo was the top scorer with 40 points. He also added 9 rebounds, 3 assists and made 4 blocks in 40 minutes. It was Bucks' fourth consecutive loss in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Antetokounmpo's fifth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 31.9ppg, 9.8rpg, 4.7apg, 1.6bpg and 1.5spg in 10 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Tonye Jekiri (213-C-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) led his Belgian team Oostende to a victory against the closely-ranked Stelmet (2-3) 82-78 in the Basketball Champions League last Tuesday. Jekiri scored 12 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 2 blocks in 27 minutes. Telenet BC Oostende (2-3) is placed 53rd in the Basketball Champions League. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Jekiri's stats this year are: 11.6ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.4apg in five games.

   #3. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in EuroCup) contributed to Darussafaka's victory against the fifth-ranked Andorra (1-4) 85-77 in the Eurocup in Tuesday night's game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 23 minutes. Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul (5-0) is placed first in the Eurocup. So far his team won all five games in the Regular Season. This year Eric averages: 8.8ppg and 5.6rpg in five games.

   #4. Olu Ashaolu (200-PF-88, college: Oregon, currently plays in Japan) led Sendai 89ers to a victory over the fourth-ranked Dragonflies (6-7) 108-89 in the Japanese B2 League last Sunday. He was the best player in that game. Ashaolu recorded a double-double by scoring 38 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 assists. Sendai 89ers (6-7) are placed third in East group. This season Ashaolu has very high stats. He averages: 20.2ppg, 8.2rpg and 2.2apg. Ashaolu is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and Canadian. Despite his Nigerian nationality, Ashaolu previously played for the Canadian U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #5. Experienced Kenny Adeleke (205-C-83, college: Hartford, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Fuerza Regia in their game against Soles (6-2) in the Mexican LNBP (second division). He scored 8 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Fuerza Regia was defeated 68-56 in Mexicali by the leading Soles. It's Adeleke's first season with the team. This year Adeleke averages: 6.5ppg and 12.5rpg.

   #6. Obi Emegano (190-G-93, college: ORU, currently plays in France) was the major contributor in a SPO Rouen's victory against one of league's weakest teams Aix-Maurienne 96-86 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He recorded 25 points and grabbed 5 rebounds (made all of his six free throws) in 29 minutes. Emegano averaged so far 14.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.3apg in four games. He has both Nigerian and British nationalities.

   #7. Michael Ojo (216-C-93, college: Florida St., currently plays in ABA League) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Cibona crushing them 99-79 in the ABA League on Saturday night. Ojo recorded 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws). He averaged so far 12.6ppg, 7.6rpg and 1.4bpg.

   #8. Ike Joseph Udanoh (203-PF-89, also represented by Octagon Europe, college: Wayne St., MI, currently plays in VTB United League) contributed to Astana's victory against one of league's weakest teams Parma 90-84 in the VTB United League last Sunday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 13 rebounds. Udanoh also added 3 assists and 3 steals. He averaged so far 11.6ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.8apg, 1.2bpg and 2.2spg. Udanoh also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #9. Kieron Achara (208-F/C-83, agency: Two Points, college: Duquesne, currently plays in United Kingdom) was not able to secure a victory for Glasgow Rocks (4-2) in their last game. Despite his good performance Glasgow Rocks was badly defeated 86-70 in London by the lower-ranked (#4) Lions. Achara was the top scorer with 14 points. He also added 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line) in 30 minutes. Achara averaged so far 11.9ppg, 5.9rpg, 2.7apg and 1.3bpg in seven games. He has Scottish and Nigerian nationalities.

   #10. Retin Obasohan (185-G-93, college: Alabama, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Oettinger Rockets Gotha in their game against EnBW Ludwigsburg in the German BBL. Despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game Obasohan recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals. Obasohan averaged so far 14.9ppg, 4.5rpg, 2.9apg and 2.3spg. He has dual citizenship: Belgian and Nigerian.

Kano Pillars and Gombe Bulls have qualified for the 2017 FIBA Africa Club Championship. They will represent the zone in Tunisia.
