Trevor Mbakwe selected the top Nigerian playing abroad in last week's games - Oct 6, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Nigerians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in Italy). He led Fiat TO to a victory over the 12th-ranked New Basket BR (0-1) 72-67 in the Italian Serie A in Sunday night's game. Mbakwe was MVP of the game. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 24 minutes on the court. It was his first game for Fiat TO this season. His team is placed fourth in the Serie A. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Mbakwe has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. Despite he played previously for the USA university national team, Mbakwe played also for the Nigerian national team in 2016.

Alade Aminu

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Alade Aminu (207-87, agency: 3Eye, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He was the main contributor in a JSF Nanterre's victory against Tsmoki-Minsk 80-75 in the Basketball Champions League last Monday. Aminu was the best player in that game. He scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. JSF Nanterreis placed in the Basketball Champions League. It's Aminu's first season with the team. Aminu has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 5.5rpg, 2.0spg, 2FGP: 71.4%. He played for the Nigerian national team in 2016.

Solomon Alabi

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan). He was the major contributor in Fukushima's victory against the fourth-ranked Dragonflies (1-1) 89-75 in the Japanese B2 League on Monday night. Alabi scored 18 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Fukushima Firebonds (1-1) are placed second in East group. Alabi has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 11.0rpg, 1.5apg, 1.5bpg, 1.5spg. Alabi played for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #4. Shooting guard Bryant Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile) contributed to a 3-point Deportivo Valdivia's victory against the second-ranked Puerto Montt (1-1) 83-80 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Sunday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Mbamalu had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. It was his first game for Deportivo Valdivia this season. His team is placed fifth in Conferencia Sur. Mbamalu is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He is also Nigerian national team player. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.

   #5. International center Ekenechukwu Ibekwe (207-85, college: Maryland, currently plays in Germany) could not help Oettinger Rockets Gotha (0-3) in their last game. Despite Ibekwe's very good performance the bottom-ranked Oettinger Rockets Gotha lost 69-82 on the road to the much higher-ranked (#11) Mitteldeutscher BC. He was the top scorer with 15 points. Ibekwe also added 9 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) in 31 minutes. So far Oettinger Rockets Gotha lost all three games in the Regular Season. This year Ibekwe has relatively solid stats: 13.5ppg, 8.5rpg, 2.0bpg and 2.5spg in two games he played so far. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Ibekwe used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

Michael Umeh

   #6. An experienced point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Virtus Bologna (0-1) in their last game. Despite his good performance Virtus Bologna lost 74-78 in Trento to the second-ranked Dolomiti En. TR. Umeh recorded 12 points in 24 minutes. It was his first game for Virtus Bologna this season. Umeh also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He is international player as he played for the Nigerian senior team one years ago.

   #7. Former international swingman Stan Okoye (198-91, college: VMI, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for Openjobmetis VA (0-1) in their game against Umana Venezia (1-0) in the Italian Serie A. Okoye recorded 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. It was his first game for Openjobmetis VA this season. Openjobmetis VA was badly defeated 80-62 in Venezia by the higher-ranked Umana (#8). Okoye holds both American and Nigerian passports. He used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

Dinma Odiakosa

   #8. Power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) couldn't help Le Portel (1-2) in their game against Olympique Antibes (0-3) in the French ProA. Odiakosa scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 12 minutes. Le Portel lost 63-70 in Antibes to the lower-ranked (#15) Olympique. This year Odiakosa's overall stats are: 6.0ppg and 6.0rpg in three games. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team back in 2004.

   #9. International forward Andy Ogide (204-87, agency: HMS, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Roseto Sharks (0-1) in their game against Orasi Ravenna (1-0) in the Italian Serie A2 (second division). Despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game Ogide was the top scorer with 15 points. It was his first game for Roseto Sharks this season. Ogide used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #10. Guard Daniel Nwaelele (193-84, college: Air Force, currently plays in France) managed to help Paris-Levallois in a 2-point victory against the closely-ranked Chalon/Saor (0-3) 79-77 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. He scored 5 points in 16 minutes. Paris-Levallois (1-2) is placed 14th in the ProA. This year Nwaelele's total stats are: 2.7ppg and 1.7rpg in three games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwaelele is international player as one years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. International small forward Jamal Olasewere (201-91, also represented by HMS, college: LIU Brooklyn, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Agribertocchi OR in their game against Alma Trieste in the Italian Serie A2 (second division), despite his very good performance on Monday night. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 11 rebounds in 25 minutes. It was his first game for Agribertocchi OR this season. But his team lost 73-78. Olasewere holds both American and Nigerian passports. He used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #12. Former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Kagawa FA in their game against Kanazawa Samuraiz in the Japanese B2 League. Kuso recorded 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. His team were defeated 76-67. Kuso has averaged so far 8.5ppg and 5.5rpg. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2007.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Rasheed Sulaimon (193-G-94, college: Maryland, currently plays in France) could not help JDA Dijon (2-1) in their last game. Despite Sulaimon's very good performance JDA Dijon lost 74-87 on the road to the higher-ranked (#6) JL Bourg. He was the top scorer with 16 points. Sulaimon also added 5 assists in 33 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Sulaimon has relatively solid stats: 14.7ppg, 2.7rpg and 3.3apg in three games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. Despite Sulaimon's Nigerian passport, he previously played for the USA U19 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #2. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in France) led Strasbourg IG to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked Chalons-Reims (1-2) crushing them 93-72 in the French ProA in Tuesday night's game. Otule scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Strasbourg IG Basket (3-0) is placed fifth in the ProA. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This season Otule averages: 6.3ppg and 2.7rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #3. Tonye Jekiri (213-C-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Belgium) was the major contributor in Oostende's victory against one of league's weakest teams Leuven Bears (0-2) crushing them 82-60 in the Belgian Euromillions League last Saturday. Jekiri scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. Telenet BC Oostende (2-0) is placed second in the Euromillions League. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This year Jekiri has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg and 6.0rpg in two games.

   #4. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, agency: Alti Sport, college: Siena, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Real Betis (0-2) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Real Betis was defeated 90-80 at home by the much higher-ranked Valencia Basket (#7). Anosike was the second best scorer with 19 points. He also added 8 rebounds. This season Anosike has relatively solid stats: 14.0ppg and 7.0rpg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #5. Olu Ashaolu (200-PF-88, college: Oregon, currently plays in Japan) was not able to secure a victory for Sendai 89ers (1-2) in their last game. Despite Ashaolu's very good performance the fourth-placed Sendai 89ers (1-2) lost 72-77 on their home court in Sendai to the higher-ranked (#3) Toyotsu FE in the East group. He had a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 10 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) in 21 minutes. Ashaolu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.0ppg, 10.0rpg and 2.0apg in two games. Ashaolu also holds two passports: Nigerian and Canadian. Despite his Nigerian nationality, Ashaolu previously played for the Canadian U18 national team and probably cannot be called to the Nigerian team.

   #6. Michael Ojo (216-C-93, college: Florida St., currently plays in ABA League) led his Serbian team FMP to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked MZT Skopje crushing them 100-72 in the ABA League in Tuesday night's game. He scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. This season Ojo has relatively solid stats: 11.0ppg, 4.0rpg and 1.5spg.

   #7. Michael Fakuade (201-F-89, college: Ill.-Springfield, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Gipuzkoa in their game against Gran Canaria in the Spanish Liga Endesa. He recorded 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 16 minutes. His team lost 76-84. This year Fakuade's overall stats are: 7.5ppg, 3.5rpg and 2.0apg in two games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #8. Experienced Reggie Okosa (207-C-80, college: La Salle, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Espanol de Talca (1-1) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Okosa's very good performance the third-placed Espanol de Talca was edged 75-73 in Concepcion by the lower-ranked Universidad de (#4) in the Conferencia Centro. He recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 12 rebounds. It was his first game for Espanol de Talca this season. Okosa holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Emmanuel Omogbo (203-F-95, agency: Mansfield and Associates, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Italy) couldn't help VL Pesaro (0-1) in their last game. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked VL Pesaro was edged 73-70 on their home court in Pesaro by the much higher-ranked (#5) Germani BR. Omogbo had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 33 minutes. It was his first game for VL Pesaro this season. Omogbo holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Retin Obasohan (185-G-93, college: Alabama, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Oettinger Rockets Gotha in their game against EWE Baskets in the German BBL. Despite his very good performance last Tuesday He was the top scorer with 17 points. Obasohan also added 4 passes. This season Obasohan has relatively solid stats: 14.5ppg, 3.5rpg, 4.5apg and 1.5spg. He holds both Belgian and Nigerian passports.   




Ike Iroegbu

Los Angeles Clippers (NBA) added to their roster 22-year old Nigerian international guard Ike Iroegbu (188-86kg-95). Iroegbu just graduated from Washington State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last four years. In 31 games he recorded 12.6ppg, 4.2rpg and 3.6apg last season. A very spectacular year in his career as he was voted to Afrobasket.com All-Afrobasket Championships 1st Team. Iroegbu has never been drafted by the NBA. Philadelphia 76ers cut experienced 35-year old former American international power forward Emeka Okafor (208-116kg-82, college: Connecticut). He has a double citizenship as he also holds Nigerian passport. In 2004 Charlotte Bobcats selected him as second overall pick in NBA draft. Golden State Warriors (NBA) waived 25-year old Nigerian international forward Michael Gbinije (201-91kg-92, college: Syracuse). Gbinije ended the last season at the Pistons. But in 9 NBA games he recorded just 0.4ppg. But the most of that year he spent at another team Drive where in 16 games he averaged 12.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.8apg and 1.9spg.
