Ekpe Udoh's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Nigerians playing currently abroad: - Jun 16, 2017

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Turkey). He led Fenerbahce to an overtime victory against the closely-ranked Besiktas (24-6) 86-80 in a derby game in the Turkish BSL in Wednesday night's game. Udoh had a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added 4 assists in 39 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Fenerbahce Istanbul (28-2) is placed first in the BSL. It was his team's 21st consecutive victory in a row. Udoh has relatively good stats this year: 10.1ppg, 6.1rpg, 2.3apg, 1.6bpg, 2FGP: 59.8%(122-204), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 60.9% in 30 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. Udoh is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced international point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy). He led Virtus Bologna to a victory over the second-ranked Alma Trieste (24-11) crushing them 85-62 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) last Tuesday. Umeh was MVP of the game. He recorded 29 points (!!!) and added 3 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group East. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (24-9) is placed first. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Umeh has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.8ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 50.8%, 3FGP: 41.3% and FT: 82.0%. Umeh is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Italy). Ejim contributed to an Umana Venezia's victory against the closely-ranked Dolomiti En. TR (18-12) 73-67 in the Italian Serie A on Wednesday night. He scored 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 30 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Umana Reyer Venezia (21-9) is placed second in the Serie A. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Ejim's overall stats are: 10.0ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.7apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 50.6%, 3FGP: 36.6% and FT: 67.6% in 43 games. He has both Canadian and Nigerian nationalities. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team five years ago.

Center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Puerto Rico) was the major contributor in Vaqueros' victory against the second-ranked Fajardo (18-10) 96-84 in the Puerto Rican BSN in Wednesday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. Akindele also added 5 assists and 4 blocks. Vaqueros de Bayamon (13-18) is placed seventh in the BSN. This season Akindele has very high stats. He averages: 16.1ppg, 10.2rpg, 3.8apg and 1.1bpg. Akindele used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2009.

International center Ekenechukwu Ibekwe (207-85, college: Maryland, currently plays in France) contributed to Chalon/Saor's victory against the closely-ranked Strasbourg IG (23-11) 89-75 in the French ProA on Tuesday night. He recorded 7 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (27-7) is placed second in the ProA. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. Ibekwe's total stats this season are: 5.2ppg and 3.1rpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Ibekwe plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #6. Small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) could not help Provence Basket (22-12) in their last game. Despite Obasohan's good performance Provence Basket lost 74-85 at home to the lower-ranked (#6) Nantes. He scored 10 points and added 3 assists in 25 minutes. This year Obasohan has relatively solid stats: 14.2ppg, 3.7rpg and 2.2apg in 38 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Obasohan is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

Former international guard Henry Uhegwu (191-82, college: S.Utah, currently plays in Colombia) was the main contributor in a Fast Break's victory against the league outsider Piratas (3-9) 94-77 in a derby game in the Colombian Liga DirecTV on Wednesday night. He was the best player in that game. Uhegwu scored 20 points and added 9 passes. Fast Break (9-1) is placed first in the Liga DirecTV. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. Uhegwu has reliable stats this season: 13.0ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.8apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Uhegwu used to play for the Nigerian national team ten years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Princeton Onwas (198-G-93, college: San Jose St., currently plays in Australia) led Brisbane Capitals to a victory over the 11th-ranked Maroochydore Clippers (2-4) crushing them 112-89 in the Australian State League (second division) last Saturday. He was the best player in that game. Onwas scored 39 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds in 33 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Brisbane Capitals (6-0) are placed second in QBL group. So far his team won all six games in the Regular Season. Onwas has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 21.5ppg, 6.5rpg, 2.5apg and 2.5spg in six games he played so far. Onwas has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American.

   #2. Weyinmi Rose (196-G/F-86, college: Providence, currently plays in Dominican Republic) could not help Huracanes PP (3-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Huracanes PP was edged 105-104 on the road by the higher-ranked (#3) Indios SFM. Rose was the top scorer with 24 points in 31 minutes. Rose has very impressive stats this year: 17.3ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.1apg and 2.1spg in seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and Jamaican.

   #3. Nnanna Egwu (211-F/C-92, college: Illinois, currently plays in New Zealand) was the major contributor in Rangers' victory against the closely-ranked Rams (10-8) crushing them 102-82 in the New Zealand NBL last Saturday. Egwu recorded 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds; not bad, considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. James Blond Supercity Rangers (11-7) are placed third in the NBL. The Regular Season already ended. This season Egwu has relatively solid stats: 12.4ppg, 7.6rpg, 1.2apg and 1.5bpg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #4. Augustine Okosun (210-C-86, college: Kaiser, currently plays in Dominican Republic) was not able to help Reales LV (2-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Reales LV was defeated 106-101 at home by the higher-ranked Indios SFM (#3). Okosun recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds. Okosun has reliable stats this season: 10.4ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.7bpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #5. Chinemelu Elonu (206-F/C-87, college: Texas A&M, currently plays in Puerto Rico) managed to help Capitanes de Arecibo in a victory against the league leader Santeros (20-9) 92-85 in the Puerto Rican BSN last Friday. Elonu scored only 2 points and blocked 2 shots in 19 minutes. Capitanes de Arecibo (14-14) is placed sixth in the BSN. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Elonu's total stats are: 2.0ppg and 1.5rpg in two games.

Nigerian Premier Basketball League defending champions, Kano Pillars and top notch Nigerian club, at the weekend emerged champions of the Savannah and Atlantic Conference Six of the Kwese Premier League playoffs after winning all the five matches. Defending champions, Kano Pillars have won the Kwese Premier League Savannah Conference Six play-offs after winning all their five matches and ending the championship with one hundred percent record finish. The tournament which held inside the Indoor Hall of the Murtala Square Kaduna between August 14-19 had six teams from the Savannah Conference namely; Kano Pillars, Gombe Bulls, Plateau Peaks, Niger Potters, Bauchi Net and Kada Stars. Ojo inks at FMP Beograd at the beginning of his pro career - 5 days ago
FMP Beograd (KLS) strengthened their roster with addition of 24-year old Nigerian center Michael Ojo (216-138kg-93). Ojo just graduated from Florida State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last five years. In 35 games he recorded 4.9ppg and 3.2rpg last season. Ojo helped them to end the regular season as a second best team in Atlantic Coast Conference.
