Ekpe Udoh's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Nigerians playing currently abroad: - May 19, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Nigerians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Ekpe Udoh

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Euroleague). He led his Turkish team Fenerbahce to a victory over the league leader Real Madrid (23-7) 84-75 in the Euroleague in Friday night's game. Udoh was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 12 rebounds. Udoh also added 8 assists and 2 blocks in 38 minutes on the court. Fenerbahce Istanbul (18-12) is placed fifth in the Euroleague. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Udoh has relatively good stats this year: 12.2ppg, 7.7rpg, 2.1apg, 2.1bpg, 2FGP: 58.7%(149-254) and FT: 63.0% in 30 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Alade Aminu

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Alade Aminu (210-87, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Lebanon). Aminu could not help Al Riyadi (6-0) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his very good performance the first-placed Al Riyadi (6-0) was edged 82-79 in a derby game by the leading Homenetmen in the Group B. Aminu recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. It's Aminu's first season with the team. Aminu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 9.1rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1bpg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 53.9%, 3FGP: 26.3% and FT: 65.7%. Aminu is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

Melvin Ejim

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Italy). He contributed to an Umana Venezia's victory against the seventh-ranked The Flexx PT (15-15) 84-71 in the Italian Serie A on Saturday night. Ejim recorded 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Umana Reyer Venezia (21-9) is placed second in the Serie A. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Ejim has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 5.5rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 49.2%, 3FGP: 43.3% and FT: 66.3% in 34 games. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team five years ago.

   #4. Power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Banco di Srd (17-13) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his good performance Banco di Srd was defeated 75-69 at home by the higher-ranked Dolomiti En. TR (#4). Lawal scored 11 points, had 7 rebounds and made 2 blocks (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). Lawal has reliable stats this season: 10.3ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.2bpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2013.

   #5. Former U22 international power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) was the major contributor in a STB Le Havre's surprising victory against the league leader JL Bourg (25-9) 94-79 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 12 rebounds in 32 minutes. STB Le Havre (18-16) is placed seventh in the ProB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. Odiakosa's stats this year are: 14.0ppg and 9.8rpg in 34 games. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team thirteen years ago.

   #6. Forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Andorra (16-16) in their game against Real Madrid (25-7) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Despite his very good performance on Sunday night Antetokounmpo recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Antetokounmpo's overall stats this season are: 7.3ppg and 3.8rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

International center Ekenechukwu Ibekwe (207-85, college: Maryland, currently plays in France) contributed to a 2-point Chalon/Saor's victory against the sixth-ranked Paris-Levallois (20-14) 85-83 in the French ProA in Friday night's game. Ibekwe scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in a mere 17 minutes. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (27-7) is placed second in the ProA. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Ibekwe's overall stats are: 6.0ppg and 4.3rpg in four games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Ibekwe is also Nigerian national team player.

An experienced forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Gunma (40-20) in their game against Nishinomiya Storks (43-17) in the Japanese B League D2, despite his very good performance last Thursday. Kuso was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 7 rebounds and 6 blocks in 35 minutes. But Gunma lost 59-68 on the road to the leading Nishinomiya Storks in the East group. Kuso averaged so far 12.9ppg, 8.6rpg, 1.4apg and 1.8bpg in 62 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2007.

Former international center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Venezuela) contributed to Marinos' victory against the second-ranked Bucaneros (16-15) 83-72 in the Venezuelan LPB on Saturday night. Akindele scored 12 points. Marinos de Anzoategui (13-17) is placed fourth in Eastern Conference. Akindele's total stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.2apg. He used to play for the Nigerian national team eight years ago.

Guard Michael Efevberha (193-84, college: CS Northridge, currently plays in Switzerland) contributed to Monthey's victory against the third-ranked Lugano Tigers (15-10) 90-78 in the Swiss LNA in Saturday night's game. Efevberha recorded 20 points and added 8 assists in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Places 1-6. BBC Monthey (18-7) is placed second. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Efevberha averaged so far 14.6ppg, 5.0rpg, 6.0apg and 1.2spg in five games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Efevberha is a former international player as eight years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Roseto crushing them 93-66 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) last Tuesday. He scored 10 points and added 3 passes in 24 minutes. Umeh has very impressive stats this year: 16.6ppg, 3.2rpg, 2.4apg and 1.1spg in 36 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #12. International power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in France) contributed to a JSF Nanterre's victory against the closely-ranked Paris-Levallois 90-81 in the French ProA on Tuesday night. He recorded 7 points. It was his first game for JSF Nanterre this season. Braimoh holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. International power forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-84, college: SMU, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Balikesir in their game against Darussafaka in the Turkish BSL, despite his good performance in Tuesday night's game. Ofoegbu scored 11 points in 26 minutes. But his team was crushed by 23 points 95-72. Ofoegbu averaged so far 11.9ppg and 4.5rpg in 30 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ofoegbu is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. Former international forward Aloysius Anagonye (203-81, college: Michigan St., currently plays in France) helped ALM Evreux win their game against the fourth-ranked Boulazac Basket 75-68 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He recorded 11 points. Anagonye's total stats this season are: 5.4ppg and 3.8rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Anagonye used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2009.

   #15. International small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) helped Provence Basket win their game against the 11th-ranked SPO Rouen 83-76 in the French ProB (second division) on Friday night. He recorded 8 points in 18 minutes. Obasohan averaged so far 14.8ppg, 3.8rpg and 2.3apg in 33 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Obasohan is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Micheal Eric (210-F/C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Spain) could not help RETAbet BB (14-18) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance RETAbet BB was defeated 86-80 on the road by the higher-ranked Gran Canaria (#7). Eric recorded 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. Eric's total stats this season are: 9.5ppg and 5.6rpg.

   #2. Chinemelu Elonu (206-F/C-87, college: Texas A&M, currently plays in Greece) was not able to help AEK Athens in their game against Panathinaikos (14-8) in the Greek A1. He scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 13 minutes. AEK Athens lost 72-81 in a derby game to the lower-ranked (#3) Panathinaikos. This year Elonu's total stats are: 5.7ppg and 5.3rpg in 19 games he played so far.

   #3. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in France) led Olympique Antibes to a victory over the ninth-ranked Gravelines-Dunkerque (16-18) 79-71 in the French ProA in Tuesday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Otule recorded 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Sharks Antibes (12-22) is placed 14th in the ProA. The Regular Season already ended. Otule averaged so far 13.6ppg and 6.1rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American.

   #4. Danny Agbelese (206-F/C-90, college: Hampton, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Pau-Lacq-Orthez (22-12) in their game against JDA Dijon (12-22) in the French ProA. He recorded 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Pau-Lacq-Orthez was edged 85-82 in JDA Dijon by the much lower-ranked JDA Dijon (#13). There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Agbelese's total stats this season are: 6.2ppg and 5.6rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #5. Etinosa Erevbenagie (186-G-95, currently plays in Greece) was the main contributor in Kavala's victory against the closely-ranked Doxa Pefkon (10-20) 72-65 in the Greek A2 (second division) on Saturday night. Erevbenagie was the best player in that game. He scored 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 32 minutes. Enosi Kalathosfairisis Kavalas (10-20) is placed 12th in the A2. Erevbenagie averaged so far 12.7ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.6apg and 1.7spg in 25 games. He has both Nigerian and Greek nationalities.

   #6. Princeton Onwas (198-G-93, college: San Jose St., currently plays in Australia) was the major contributor in a Brisbane Capitals' victory against the third-ranked Cairns Marlins 98-92 in the Australian State League (second division) in Saturday night's game. Onwas scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Onwas has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 18.0ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.7apg and 2.3spg. Onwas also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #7. Lotanna Nwogbo (203-F/C-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Alianza Viedma in their game against Atenas in the Argentinian TNA (second division). Despite his good performance in Friday night's game He recorded 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Nwogbo averaged so far 13.8ppg and 7.7rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #8. Nnanna Egwu (211-F/C-92, college: Illinois, currently plays in New Zealand) contributed to Rangers' victory against one of league's weakest teams Hawks 95-88 in the New Zealand NBL last Saturday. Egwu scored 8 points, had 10 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Egwu averaged so far 12.3ppg, 8.1rpg and 1.5bpg in 12 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Olajide Keshinro (203-C-90, agency: Duran International, college: Mercy, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Moron in their game against Blancos de Rueda in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Despite his very good performance on Sunday night Keshinro recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. Keshinro's total stats this season are: 7.7ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.1bpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Olu Ashaolu (200-PF-88, agency: Babcock Sports, college: Oregon, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Sanen Neophoenix in their game against Toyota Alvark in the Japanese B League. Ashaolu recorded only 4 points in 5 minutes on the court. His team lost 75-90. This year Ashaolu's total stats are: 9.7ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.1apg in 61 games. He has dual citizenship: Nigerian and Canadian.

Fiat Torino (Serie A) added to their roster 28-year old Nigerian international power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-111kg-89, college: Minnesota, agency: Pensack Sports). He is a dual citizen owning also American passport. Mbakwe played last season at Zenit in Russian VTB league. In 12 Eurocup games he recorded 4.5ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.1spg. Karesi Spor (TB2L) inked 29-year old Nigerian power forward Gani Lawal (206-106kg-88, college: Georgia Tech). He played most recently at Banco di Srd in Italian Serie A. In 22 games he recorded 10.3ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.2bpg last season. Lawal helped them to make it to the cup final. He also played 11 games in Basketball Champions League where he averaged 9.0ppg and 3.5rpg. Lawal contributed to his team making it to the quarterfinals. Brissac-Aubance Basket (NM1) inked 26-year old American (has also Nigerian passport) forward Zimmy Nwogbo (201-98kg-91, college: Cedarville, agency: Duran International). He played most recently at Platense in Argentinian TNA league, but was released by the team in Jan.'17. In 10 games he recorded 14.3ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.0apg last season.
