Ekpe Udoh selected the top Nigerian playing abroad in last week's games - Apr 14, 2017

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Nigerians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Turkey). He was the major contributor in Fenerbahce's victory against the fifth-ranked Banvit (17-8) 86-75 in the Turkish BSL in Sunday night's game. Udoh recorded 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and made 2 blocks in 29 minutes on the court. Fenerbahce Istanbul (20-5) is placed first in the BSL. This year Udoh averages: 9.3ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.2apg, 1.7bpg, 2FGP: 54.5%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 69.6% in 18 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Alade Aminu

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Alade Aminu (210-87, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Lebanon). Aminu led Al Riyadi to a victory against the second-ranked Al Moutahed (13-11) 88-82 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL last Thursday. He scored 22 points, had 9 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in Group B. Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut (6-0) is placed first. So far his team won all six games in the Second Stage. They will play only one more game in the Second Stage. And that game will be critical. It's Aminu's first season with the team. Aminu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.2ppg, 9.3rpg, 1.9apg, 1.2bpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 56.5%(147-260), 3FGP: 31.3% and FT: 62.5%. Aminu is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard Michael Efevberha (193-84, college: CS Northridge, currently plays in Lebanon). He led Sagesse to a victory over the second-ranked Byblos (16-8) 72-63 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL in Friday night's game. Efevberha was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 12 rebounds. Efevberha also added 3 assists. Sagesse - Al Hekmeh Beirut (8-16) is placed fourth in Group A. His team will play only one more game in the Second Stage. And now that game is very crucial. This season Efevberha has very high stats. He averages: 23.5ppg, 7.1rpg, 4.9apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 53.7%, 3FGP: 32.4% and FT: 84.3%. Efevberha has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. He played for the Nigerian national team eight years ago.

Solomon Alabi

   #4. Center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan) was the main contributor in a Toyotsu FE's victory against the fifth-ranked Bambitious Nara (20-32) 96-86 in the Japanese B League D2 last Saturday. Alabi was the best player in that game. He had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 12 rebounds in 34 minutes. Toyotsu Fighting Eagles Nagoya (37-15) is placed second in Central group. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Alabi has very impressive stats this year: 18.0ppg, 13.0rpg, 1.3apg and 1.4bpg in 50 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2013.

   #5. International small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, agency: BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked ALM Evreux (15-13) crushing them 108-73 in the French ProB (second division) in Friday night's game. Obasohan was the top player that evening. He recorded 29 points (!!!), 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 28 minutes. FOS Provence Basket (19-9) is placed second in the ProB. Obasohan has very impressive stats this year: 15.1ppg, 3.9rpg and 2.5apg in 28 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Obasohan plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #6. Center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Puerto Rico) could not help Vaqueros (1-3) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Vaqueros was edged 87-86 on the road by the higher-ranked Fajardo (#3). Akindele was the top scorer with 21 points. He also added 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Akindele has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 10.3rpg, 3.8apg and 1.3bpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Nigerian senior team eight years ago.

International forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves (31-51) 105-98 in the NBA in Thursday night's game. He scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have 41-40 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the NBA Regular Season. This season Aminu has relatively solid stats: 8.6ppg, 7.4rpg and 1.6apg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

Point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) helped Virtus Bologna win their game against the 14th-ranked Chieti (9-19) crushing them 91-71 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) last Sunday. Umeh was the top player that evening. He recorded 22 points and added 3 passes in 25 minutes. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (20-8) is placed first in East group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Umeh has very impressive stats this year: 17.4ppg, 3.1rpg and 2.1apg in 28 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Umeh plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

International power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in VTB United League) helped his Russian team Enisey win their game against the closely-ranked VEF Riga (10-12) 88-71 in the VTB United League on Sunday night. He was the top player that evening. Braimoh recorded 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Enisey Krasnoyarsk (12-10) is placed sixth in group A. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. Braimoh has reliable stats this season: 12.8ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.3spg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Braimoh is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

Forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Italy) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Umana Venezia in their game against Armani Milano (21-5) in the Italian Serie A. He scored 7 points in 23 minutes. Umana Venezia lost 80-88 in Milano to the leading Armani. They ended the series of five consecutive victories. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Ejim's stats this year are: 10.5ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.8apg in 26 games. He is a former international player as five years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. Former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) helped Gunma win their game against the sixth-ranked Iwate Big Bulls crushing them 85-65 in the Japanese B League D2 on Saturday night. Kuso was the top player that evening. He scored 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and made 4 blocks in 20 minutes. Kuso averaged so far 13.4ppg, 8.7rpg, 1.2apg and 1.7bpg in 52 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team ten years ago.

   #12. Former U22 international power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for STB Le Havre (12-9) in their last game on Friday. Despite Odiakosa's good performance STB Le Havre was defeated 69-62 in Roanne by the much lower-ranked Chorale de (#14). He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 10 rebounds. Odiakosa's stats this season are: 13.9ppg and 9.4rpg. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team back in 2004.

   #13. Former international power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Banco di Sardegna Sassari to win against the closely-ranked Dolomiti En. TR 66-57 in the Italian Serie A on Sunday night. Lawal scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Lawal's overall stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 6.8rpg and 1.3bpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #14. International power forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-84, college: SMU, currently plays in Turkey) helped Balikesir win their game against the league outsider TED Kolejliler 86-73 in the Turkish BSL last Saturday. Ofoegbu recorded 9 points. Ofoegbu averaged so far 11.9ppg and 4.4rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ofoegbu plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. International swingman Ebi Ere (195-81, agency: Two Points, college: Oklahoma, currently plays in France) couldn't help Sluc Nancy (6-21) in their last game. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked Sluc Nancy was crushed 106-74 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Chalon/Saor. Ere scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in only 14 minutes. Ere averaged so far 12.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.2apg and 1.1spg in 11 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ere is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) could not help the Milwaukee Bucks (42-40) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Milwaukee Bucks (42-40) lost 89-104 on the road to the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo was the top scorer with 25 points. He also added 7 rebounds and dished 6 assists in 35 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the NBA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Antetokounmpo is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Bucks' roster. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 22.9ppg, 8.8rpg, 5.4apg, 1.9bpg and 1.7spg in 80 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Experienced Ndudi Ebi (206-F-84, currently plays in Iran) led Tabriz to a victory over the fourth-ranked Arak (2-3) 67-58 in the Iranian Superleague on Monday night. Ebi was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 17 rebounds. Ebi also added 3 blocks and 4 steals. It was his first game for Tabriz this season. His team is placed second in Group 1. There are only four games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game is very crucial.

   #3. Chinemelu Elonu (206-F/C-87, college: Texas A&M, currently plays in Greece) was not able to help AEK Athens in their game against Aris (15-11) in the Greek A1. Elonu scored 5 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 24 minutes. AEK Athens lost 77-81 in Thessaloniki to the lower-ranked (#4) Aris. The Regular Season already ended. This year Elonu's overall stats are: 6.6ppg and 5.7rpg in 14 games.

   #4. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in a Olympique Antibes' victory against the closely-ranked Chalons-Reims (9-19) 82-69 in the French ProA last Friday. Otule was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 10 rebounds; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Otule's third season in pro basketball. Sharks Antibes (9-19) is placed 15th in the ProA. Otule's stats this season are: 13.8ppg and 6.0rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #5. Etinosa Erevbenagie (186-G-95, currently plays in Greece) was not able to secure a victory for Kavala (8-17) in their last game. Despite Erevbenagie's very good performance Kavala was edged 67-65 at home by the second-ranked Iraklis. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Erevbenagie also added 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 35 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Erevbenagie averaged so far 12.3ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.1apg and 1.5spg in 18 games. He has both Nigerian and Greek nationalities.

   #6. Nnanna Egwu (211-F/C-92, college: Illinois, currently plays in New Zealand) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Rangers (3-2) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Rangers were crushed 100-73 in Southland by the higher-ranked (#3) Sharks. Egwu was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in 28 minutes. Egwu has very impressive stats this year: 15.6ppg, 9.4rpg and 1.8bpg in five games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #7. Micheal Eric (210-F/C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a RETAbet BB's victory against the 15th-ranked Sevilla 85-73 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Saturday. Eric recorded 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Eric's overall stats this season are: 9.1ppg and 5.4rpg.

   #8. Daniel Ochefu (211-F-93, college: Villanova, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Washington Wizards in their game against the Miami Heat in the NBA. He scored 8 points in 17 minutes. His team lost 102-110 in the NBA. This year Ochefu's overall stats are: 1.3ppg and 1.2rpg in 19 games.

   #9. Talib Zanna (206-F-90, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in France) managed to help JSF Nanterre to win against the 12th-ranked JDA Dijon 71-55 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. He scored 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Zanna's overall stats this season are: 8.1ppg and 3.7rpg.

   #10. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, college: Siena, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Openjobmetis VA in their game against Grissin Bon RE in the Italian Serie A. He scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. His team lost 68-73. Anosike averaged so far 10.1ppg and 11.1rpg in 24 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.
