Melvin Ejim's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Nigerians playing currently abroad: - Mar 31, 2017

   #1. This week's number one is former international forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He led his Italian team Umana Venezia to a victory over the closely-ranked Pinar Karsiyaka (9-5) 74-66 in the Basketball Champions League last Wednesday. Ejim was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 11 rebounds. Ejim also added 3 assists; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Umana Reyer Venezia (9-5) is placed third in group B. It's Ejim's first year with the team. Ejim has relatively good stats this season: 11.5ppg, 6.2rpg, 1.5apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 52.6%, 3FGP: 46.5%(20-43) and FT: 77.8%. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian senior national team five years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Euroleague). He could not help one of league's weakest teams Fenerbahce (17-12) to beat Anadolu Efes (17-12). Udoh recorded 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. Fenerbahce was edged 80-77 in a derby game by the higher-ranked (#6) Anadolu Efes. It was Fenerbahce's third consecutive loss in a row. His team will play only one more game in the Euroleague Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Udoh has relatively solid stats: 12.0ppg, 7.4rpg, 1.9apg, 2.2bpg, 2FGP: 57.4%(120-209) and FT: 61.5% in 25 games he played so far. He is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard Michael Efevberha (193-84, college: CS Northridge, currently plays in Lebanon). He was the main contributor in Sagesse's victory against the second-ranked Al Moutahed (11-9) 77-76 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL last Thursday. Efevberha was the best player in that game. He scored 33 points (!!!), grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 39 minutes. Sagesse - Al Hekmeh Beirut (6-14) is placed fourth in Group A. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Efevberha has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 22.1ppg, 7.3rpg, 5.0apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 56.2%(50-89), 3FGP: 29.3% and FT: 89.5% in 10 games. Efevberha is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He played for the Nigerian national team eight years ago.

Center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan) contributed to a Toyotsu FE's victory against the fourth-ranked Earthfriends Tokyo Z (20-29) 82-77 in the Japanese B League D2 on Sunday night. Alabi was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 10 rebounds. Toyotsu Fighting Eagles Nagoya (34-15) is placed second in Central group. Alabi's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. This season Alabi has very high stats. He averages: 17.9ppg, 13.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.4bpg. Alabi used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2013.

   #5. International power forward Alade Aminu (210-87, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Lebanon) was not able to help Al Riyadi (6-0) in their last game. Despite his good performance the first-placed Al Riyadi (6-0) was badly defeated 67-49 in a derby game by the leading Homenetmen in the Group B. Aminu had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Aminu has reliable stats this year: 15.0ppg, 9.2rpg, 2.1apg, 1.3bpg and 1.4spg in 20 games. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) helped Portland Trail Blazers win their game against the Houston Rockets (51-24) 117-107 in the NBA last Thursday. He scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 31 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 37-37 record this season. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Aminu's stats this year are: 8.4ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.7apg in 54 games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

International power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in VTB United League) helped his Russian team Enisey win their game against one of league's weakest teams Tsmoki-Minsk (4-16) 86-78 in the VTB United League in Saturday night's game. Braimoh was the top player that evening. He scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 23 minutes. Enisey Krasnoyarsk (10-10) is placed seventh in the VTB United League. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. It's Braimoh's first season with the team. Braimoh averaged so far 12.6ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.9apg and 1.2spg in 20 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Braimoh is also Nigerian national team player.

Power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in VTB United League) helped his Russian team Zenit win their game against the closely-ranked Lokomotiv (13-5) 83-80 in the VTB United League on Saturday night. Mbakwe scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Zenit Saint Petersburg (18-3) is placed second in the VTB United League. It was his team's 12th consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. This year Mbakwe's overall stats are: 5.6ppg and 3.9rpg in 16 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Despite Mbakwe played previously for the USA university national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

Kuso had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 2 blocks in a mere 19 minutes. Gunma Crane Thunders (31-17) are placed first in East group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Kuso averaged so far 13.5ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.3apg and 1.6bpg in 48 games. He is a former international player as ten years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. International small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) helped Provence Basket win their game against the 13th-ranked Saint-Quentin 89-76 in the French ProB (second division) in Friday night's game. Obasohan recorded 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Obasohan averaged so far 14.8ppg, 4.0rpg and 2.4apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Obasohan plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #12. Former international power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Banco di Sardegna Sassari in a 1-point victory against the league outsider Vanoli Cremona 78-77 in the Italian Serie A last Sunday. He scored 5 points and blocked 2 shots in 17 minutes. This year Lawal's total stats are: 9.8ppg, 6.8rpg and 1.5bpg in 13 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2013.

   #13. International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for Virtus Bologna in their game against Alma Trieste in the Italian Serie A2 (second division). Despite his good performance on Sunday night He was the second best scorer with 11 points. Umeh also added 5 rebounds. This season Umeh has very high stats. He averages: 17.4ppg, 3.0rpg and 2.0apg. Umeh holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. International center Ekenechukwu Ibekwe (207-85, college: Maryland, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Usak Sportlif in their game against Darussafaka in the Turkish BSL. Ibekwe scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. His team was defeated 78-70. Ibekwe has averaged so far 5.9ppg and 4.3rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ibekwe plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. Former U22 international power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) helped STB Le Havre win their game against the closely-ranked Charleville-Mezieres crushing them 88-63 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. Odiakosa averaged so far 14.2ppg and 9.9rpg in 24 games. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team thirteen years ago.

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a 3-point victory over the Atlanta Hawks (39-36) 100-97 in the NBA in Friday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo had a double-double by scoring 34 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 5 assists and 3 blocks in 36 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have 39-36 record this season. It's Antetokounmpo's fourth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 23.1ppg, 8.6rpg, 5.3apg, 1.9bpg and 1.7spg in 74 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Chinemelu Elonu (206-F/C-87, college: Texas A&M, currently plays in Greece) could not help one of league's weakest teams one of league's weakest teams AEK Athens (17-6) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Elonu's good performance AEK Athens was badly defeated 106-87 in a derby game by the second-ranked Panathinaikos. He recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting the same number of rebounds. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Elonu averages: 7.4ppg and 6.2rpg.

   #3. Micheal Eric (210-F/C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help RETAbet BB (10-13) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Eric's very good performance RETAbet BB was crushed 104-76 on the road by the higher-ranked Real Madrid (#5). He was the second best scorer with 17 points. Eric also added 8 rebounds. It's Eric's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 9.5ppg and 5.6rpg.

   #4. Experienced Sani Ibrahim (207-C-82, college: Gulf Coast CC, currently plays in Slovenia) led Grosuplje to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Pingvini (4-16) 71-61 in the Slovenian 2SKL (second division) on Saturday night. Ibrahim was the top player that evening. He had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 15 rebounds in 32 minutes. GA Grosuplje (11-8) is placed third in the 2SKL. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. It's Ibrahim's first season with the team. This year Ibrahim's overall stats are: 8.0ppg and 6.8rpg in 18 games.

   #5. Kenny Adeleke (205-C-83, agency: SDJ Sports, college: Hartford, currently plays in Lebanon) was not able to secure a victory for Sagesse (6-14) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Sagesse (#4) was badly defeated 81-65 in a derby game by the leading Al Riyadi in the Group A. Adeleke recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 17 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 3 steals. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Adeleke's stats this season are: 12.5ppg, 12.5rpg, 3.0apg and 1.3spg.

   #6. Kieron Achara (208-F/C-83, agency: Two Points, college: Duquesne, currently plays in United Kingdom) couldn't help Glasgow Rocks (16-10) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Achara's very good performance Glasgow Rocks was defeated 93-84 in Leicester by the leading Riders. He recorded a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 12 rebounds. Achara's stats this season are: 15.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.6apg, 1.5bpg and 1.2spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Scottish and Nigerian.

   #7. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, college: Siena, currently plays in Italy) was the major contributor in an Openjobmetis VA's surprising victory against the fifth-ranked Betaland Cdo 74-72 in the Italian Serie A last Sunday. He scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Anosike's stats this season are: 10.3ppg and 11.3rpg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #8. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in France) couldn't help Olympique Antibes (7-18) in their last game on Friday. Despite Otule's very good performance Olympique Antibes was defeated 87-74 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Chalon/Saor (#3). He was the top scorer with 19 points. Otule also added 6 rebounds. Otule averaged so far 13.7ppg and 5.8rpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #9. Reggie Okosa (208-C-80, college: La Salle, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) in their last game. Despite Okosa's very good performance Osorno Basquetbol lost 86-91 in Ancud to the second-ranked AB Ancud in the Conferencia Sur. He was the top scorer with 27 points. Okosa also added 6 rebounds in 36 minutes. Okosa averaged so far 15.0ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.9apg and 1.2spg in 11 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Lotanna Nwogbo (203-F/C-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Alianza Viedma (23-13) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Nwogbo's very good performance Alianza Viedma (#2) was defeated 81-76 in Trelew by the lower-ranked Huracan (#4) in the South group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 10 rebounds. Nwogbo averaged so far 14.3ppg and 8.2rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

Reggie Okosa (ex Osorno) joins Libertad - 3 days ago
Libertad Asuncion (Metropolitan League) agreed terms with experienced 37-year old American (has also Nigerian passport) center Reggie Okosa (207-107kg-80, college: La Salle). He moved there from Osorno Basquetbol in Chilean Liga Nacional where he started the season. Okosa managed to play in three leagues in three countries last year.
