Ekpe Udoh's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Nigerians playing currently abroad: - Mar 24, 2017

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.


Ekpe Udoh

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Euroleague). He could not help Fenerbahce (17-11) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Udoh's good performance Fenerbahce was edged 81-79 at home by the much lower-ranked Maccabi T-A (#14). He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Udoh has relatively good stats this season: 12.2ppg, 7.6rpg, 1.9apg, 2.2bpg, 2FGP: 58.2%(117-201) and FT: 63.0%. He is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Melvin Ejim

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League). Ejim was not able to help Umana Venezia (9-5) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the third-placed Umana Venezia (9-5) was edged 74-71 on the road by the second-ranked Pinar Karsiyaka in the group B of Basketball Champions League. Ejim recorded 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. This year Ejim has relatively solid stats: 11.2ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.4apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 52.8%, 3FGP: 45.2%(19-42) and FT: 80.8% in 19 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team in 2012.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard Michael Efevberha (193-84, college: CS Northridge, currently plays in Lebanon). He led Sagesse to a victory over the closely-ranked Tadamon (6-11) 90-77 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL in Sunday night's game. Efevberha was MVP of the game. He recorded a triple-double by scoring 30 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and passing 10 assists. Sagesse - Al Hekmeh Beirut (6-11) is placed seventh in the Pepsi LBL. Efevberha's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Efevberha has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 24.1ppg, 8.3rpg, 5.3apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 55.6%(45-81), 3FGP: 31.6% and FT: 88.6%. Efevberha is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He played for the Nigerian national team eight years ago.

Dinma Odiakosa

   #4. Power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) was the major contributor in a STB Le Havre's victory against one of league's weakest teams SO Maritime Boulogne (8-15) crushing them 95-70 in the French ProB (second division) on Friday night. Odiakosa recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting the same number of rebounds. He also added 4 assists. STB Le Havre (11-7) is placed third in the ProB. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Odiakosa has reliable stats this season: 14.2ppg and 9.9rpg. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team back in 2004.

   #5. Former international center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan) was not able to secure a victory for Toyotsu FE (33-13) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Toyotsu FE was crushed 90-61 in Hyogo by the second-ranked Nishinomiya Storks in the Central group. Alabi had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 12 rebounds in 29 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Alabi has very impressive stats this year: 17.5ppg, 13.1rpg, 1.2apg and 1.4bpg in 44 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #6. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the New York Knicks (27-45) 110-95 in the NBA in Thursday night's game. Aminu recorded 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have 33-37 record this season. Aminu's stats this year are: 8.1ppg, 7.4rpg and 1.7apg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

Former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) contributed to an easy victory against the second-ranked Fukushima (26-20) 79-63 in the Japanese B League D2 last Sunday. Kuso had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks (went 6 for 6 at the free throw line) in 23 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group East. Gunma Crane Thunders (30-16) are placed first. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. It's Kuso's first season with the team. Kuso averaged so far 13.5ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.2apg and 1.7bpg in 46 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team ten years ago.

   #8. Power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in VTB United League) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Parma (0-18) crushing them 101-72 in the VTB United League on Saturday night. Mbakwe recorded 6 points and blocked 2 blocks. Zenit Saint Petersburg (17-3) is placed second in the VTB United League. It was his team's 11th consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. Mbakwe's overall stats this season are: 5.5ppg and 3.9rpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Mbakwe played previously for the USA university national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an easy victory against the 16th-ranked Recanati (6-19) crushing them 98-63 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) on Sunday night. Umeh recorded 15 points in 23 minutes. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (18-7) is placed first in East group. Umeh has very impressive stats this year: 17.7ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.1apg in 25 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #10. Center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Liga Americas) couldn't help Fuerza Regia (3-0) in their game against Leones (2-1) in the LNBP. Akindele recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The league leader Fuerza Regia was crushed 90-68 in Juana Diaz by the lower-ranked Leones (#3). This season Akindele has very high stats. He averages: 17.8ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.7apg and 1.7spg. Akindele is a former international player as eight years ago he still played for the Nigerian senior national team.

   #11. Former international power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) couldn't help Banco di Srd in their game against Monaco in the Basketball Champions League. He recorded 6 points in only 9 minutes. His team lost 62-73. This year Lawal's overall stats are: 9.5ppg and 3.7rpg in 10 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #12. International small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) couldn't help Provence Basket (16-8) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Provence Basket was badly defeated 81-63 on the opponent's court by the lower-ranked Nantes (#7). Obasohan was the second best scorer with 15 points. Obasohan averaged so far 14.8ppg, 3.9rpg and 2.3apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Obasohan is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. International forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Spain) contributed to Andorra's victory against the 14th-ranked Zaragoza 100-92 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Saturday. He recorded 6 points. Antetokounmpo's total stats this season are: 6.8ppg and 3.3rpg. He is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. International power forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-84, college: SMU, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to Balikesir's victory against the closely-ranked Trabzonspor 84-76 in the Turkish BSL in Saturday night's game. Ofoegbu recorded 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Ofoegbu averaged so far 12.4ppg and 4.4rpg in 22 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ofoegbu plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. International forward Andy Ogide (204-87, agency: HMS, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Bambitious Nara (17-29) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Bambitious Nara (#5) was crushed 102-65 in Tokyo by the higher-ranked (#3) Earthfriends Z in the Central group. Ogide was the top scorer with 19 points. He also added 8 rebounds in 20 minutes. Ogide averaged so far 12.9ppg and 6.2rpg in 45 games. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a victory over the Sacramento Kings (27-44) 116-98 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo had a double-double by scoring 32 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 6 assists in 40 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have 36-35 record this season. It's Antetokounmpo's fourth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 23.0ppg, 8.5rpg, 5.4apg, 1.9bpg and 1.7spg in 70 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Olu Ashaolu (200-PF-88, agency: Babcock Sports, college: Oregon, currently plays in Japan) could not help Sanen Neophoenix (25-20) in their last game. Despite Ashaolu's very good performance Sanen Neophoenix (#2) was edged 70-67 on the road by the lower-ranked (#5) Ryukyu GK in the Central group. He had a double-double by scoring 29 points and getting 15 rebounds in 34 minutes. It was Sanen Neophoenix's fourth consecutive loss in a row. It's Ashaolu's first season with the team. Ashaolu has reliable stats this year: 10.6ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.2apg in 44 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and Canadian. Despite Ashaolu's Nigerian nationality, he previously played for the Canadian U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #3. Micheal Eric (210-F/C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help RETAbet BB (10-12) in their last game. Despite Eric's good performance RETAbet BB lost 71-82 at home to the lower-ranked (#12) UCAM Murcia. He was the second best scorer with 14 points. Eric also added 6 rebounds in 26 minutes. This year Eric's overall stats are: 9.1ppg and 5.5rpg in 21 games.

   #4. Experienced Kenny Adeleke (205-C-83, agency: SDJ Sports, college: Hartford, currently plays in Lebanon) was the major contributor in Sagesse's victory against the closely-ranked Tadamon (6-11) 90-77 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL last Sunday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. Adeleke also added 4 assists. Sagesse - Al Hekmeh Beirut (6-11) is placed seventh in the Pepsi LBL. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Adeleke's stats this season are: 12.0ppg, 10.0rpg and 2.5apg.

   #5. Chimezie Metu (211-F-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the USC (10-8) in their last game. Despite Metu's very good performance the USC lost 78-82 on their home court in Los Angeles to the Baylor University. He scored 28 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds in 33 minutes. The National Tournament Round 2 already ended in the NCAA. Metu averaged so far 14.8ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.4apg and 1.5bpg in 36 games.

   #6. Retin Obasohan (185-G-93, college: Alabama, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Scandone Avellino to win against the closely-ranked Banco di Srd 77-65 in the Italian Serie A last Sunday. He scored only 4 points. Obasohan's overall stats this season are: 6.4ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.6apg. He has both Belgian and Nigerian nationalities.

   #7. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, college: Siena, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an Openjobmetis VA's victory against the closely-ranked Brescia 87-78 in the Italian Serie A in Sunday night's game. He scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Anosike averaged so far 10.2ppg and 11.4rpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #8. Sani Ibrahim (207-C-82, college: Gulf Coast CC, currently plays in Slovenia) contributed to Grosuplje's victory against the eighth-ranked Parklji 73-62 in the Slovenian 2SKL (second division) last Saturday. Ibrahim recorded 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 24 minutes. This year Ibrahim's overall stats are: 7.1ppg and 6.3rpg in 17 games.

   #9. Semi Ojeleye (201-F-94, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the SMU (17-1) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance the SMU was edged 66-65 in Los Angeles by the University of Southern California. Ojeleye recorded a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 10 rebounds (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line). This season Ojeleye has very high stats. He averages: 19.0ppg, 6.9rpg and 1.5apg. Ojeleye holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. P.J. Alawoya (203-F-88, agency: Inception Sports, college: McNeese St., currently plays in Iceland) was the main contributor in KR's victory against the closely-ranked Thor AK 90-80 in the Icelandic Dominos League in Tuesday night's game. Alawoya was the best player in that game. He scored 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 30 minutes. Alawoya has very impressive stats this year: 17.8ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.7apg and 1.7spg in 10 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

After playing 9 games in the 2016/2017 Kwese Premier Basketball league, winning 8 games in succession including 7 home wins, many still doubt the potentials of the River state owned basketball team, Rivers Hoopers. Libertad Asuncion (Metropolitan League) agreed terms with experienced 37-year old American (has also Nigerian passport) center Reggie Okosa (207-107kg-80, college: La Salle). He moved there from Osorno Basquetbol in Chilean Liga Nacional where he started the season. Okosa managed to play in three leagues in three countries last year.
