Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.


Ekpe Udoh

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in Euroleague). He led his Turkish team Fenerbahce to a victory over the second-ranked CSKA (16-6) 77-71 in the Euroleague in Thursday night's game. Udoh was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 11 rebounds. Udoh also added 2 blocks in 32 minutes on the court. Fenerbahce Istanbul (14-8) is placed fourth in group A. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Udoh has relatively good stats this year: 12.4ppg, 7.7rpg, 1.8apg, 2.1bpg, 2FGP: 58.7%(88-150) and FT: 64.4% in 18 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Alade Aminu

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Alade Aminu (210-87, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Lebanon). Aminu was the major contributor in a Al Riyadi's victory against one of league's weakest teams Mayrouba (3-8) 77-64 in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL on Sunday night. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting the same number of rebounds. Aminu also added and 5 steals in 32 minutes. Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut (3-0) is placed first in the Pepsi LBL. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. Aminu has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.3ppg, 9.5rpg, 2.3apg, 1.4bpg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 53.7% and FT: 70.2% in 11 games. Aminu is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

Melvin Ejim

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Melvin Ejim (200-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He could not help Umana Venezia (9-5) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Ejim's very good performance the third-placed Umana Venezia (9-5) was defeated 74-67 on the road by the lower-ranked Ventspils (#5) in the group B of Basketball Champions League. He was the top scorer with 15 points. Ejim also added 6 rebounds. This season Ejim has relatively solid stats: 10.9ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.6apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 54.8%, 3FGP: 48.3%(14-29) and FT: 80.6%. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team five years ago.

   #4. Power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Banco di Srd (10-8) in their last game. Despite his good performance Banco di Srd lost 48-56 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#8) Brescia. Lawal had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 19 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks in 22 minutes. They ended the series of five consecutive victories. It's Lawal's first season with the team. Lawal has reliable stats this year: 11.7ppg, 7.9rpg and 1.6bpg in seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2013.

   #5. International forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Portland Trail Blazers (23-30) in their game against the Boston Celtics (34-19) in the NBA. Despite his very good performance on Thursday night He was the second best scorer with 26 points. Aminu also added 5 rebounds. Aminu's stats this season are: 7.9ppg, 7.1rpg and 2.1apg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

   #6. An experienced center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Mexico) was the main contributor in a Fuerza Regia's victory against the sixth-ranked Barreteros (15-18) 66-59 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Saturday night's game. Akindele was the best player in that game. He had a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 12 rebounds in 29 minutes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (30-3) is placed first in the LNBP. Akindele's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Akindele's stats this year are: 13.9ppg, 8.9rpg and 2.3apg in 29 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Nigerian senior team eight years ago.

   #7. International power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in EuroCup) couldn't help Zenit (3-3) in their game against Lietuvos rytas (3-3) in the Eurocup. He scored 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 17 minutes. Zenit was edged 86-84 in Vilnius by the lower-ranked (#3) Lietuvos rytas. There are only two games left until the end of the Eurocup Second Stage. So now every game is very crucial. This year Mbakwe's overall stats are: 4.2ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.2spg in 10 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Mbakwe played previously for the USA university national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

   #8. Power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in VTB United League) contributed to Enisey's victory against the league outsider Parma (0-15) 87-82 in the VTB United League on Sunday night. Braimoh was the top player that evening. He scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds (went 11 for 11 at the free throw line !!!). Enisey Krasnoyarsk (7-9) is placed seventh in the VTB United League. Braimoh averaged so far 12.2ppg, 4.6rpg, 1.8apg and 1.1spg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Braimoh plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #9. International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Virtus Bologna (14-5) in their game against Bondi Ferrara (8-12) in the Italian Serie A2 (second division), despite his very good performance in Tuesday night's game. He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Umeh also added 5 passes in 36 minutes. But Virtus Bologna was edged 88-85 at home by the much lower-ranked (#12) Bondi Ferrara in the East group. It was Virtus Bologna's third consecutive loss in a row. Umeh has very impressive stats this year: 17.1ppg, 3.1rpg and 2.4apg in 19 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #10. Shooting guard Chamberlain Oguchi (196-86, college: Illinois St., currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Soles' victory against the seventh-ranked Ciudad (14-20) 96-85 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Thursday night's game. Oguchi scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Soles de Mexicali (22-12) is placed second in the LNBP. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Oguchi averaged so far 13.5ppg, 3.9rpg and 1.2apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #11. International power forward Ikechukwu Diogu (204-83, college: Arizona St., currently plays in China) contributed to a 2-point Jiangsu TX's victory against the closely-ranked Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank 114-112 in the Chinese CBA last Sunday. Diogu had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 3 assists in 27 minutes. Diogu has very impressive stats this year: 25.1ppg, 10.5rpg and 1.1apg in 22 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Diogu plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #12. International small forward Derrick Obasohan (198-81, also represented by BeoBasket, college: Texas Arlington, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Boulazac Basket 75-57 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. Obasohan was the top player that evening. He scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Obasohan averaged so far 15.0ppg, 3.8rpg and 2.4apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Obasohan is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. Former international center Solomon Alabi (216-88, college: Florida St., currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Toyotsu FE in their game against Kagoshima in the Japanese B League D2, despite his good performance on Saturday night. He had a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 17 rebounds. Alabi also added 3 assists in 30 minutes. But his team lost 75-79. Alabi has very impressive stats this year: 16.1ppg, 12.4rpg, 1.2apg and 1.4bpg in 32 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team four years ago.

   #14. Former U22 international power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, agency: Inception Sports, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) couldn't help STB Le Havre in their game against Chorale de Roanne in the French ProB (second division). Despite his good performance in Saturday night's game Odiakosa recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 15 rebounds. Odiakosa averaged so far 13.6ppg and 9.6rpg. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team back in 2004.

   #15. Former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Gunma in their game against Shimane Magic in the Japanese B League D2, despite his very good performance in Saturday night's game. Kuso had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks in 23 minutes. But his team were badly defeated by 20 points 69-49. Kuso averaged so far 14.1ppg, 9.3rpg, 1.3apg and 1.9bpg in 34 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team ten years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a victory over the Phoenix Suns (16-37) crushing them 137-112 in the NBA last Saturday. Antetokounmpo was the best player in that game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 30 points and getting 12 rebounds. Antetokounmpo also added 6 assists and 4 blocks. The Milwaukee Bucks have 22-29 record this season. It's Antetokounmpo's fourth year with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Antetokounmpo averages: 23.2ppg, 8.8rpg, 5.4apg, 1.9bpg and 1.7spg. He has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Retin Obasohan (185-G-93, college: Alabama, currently plays in Italy) could not help Scandone AV (12-6) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Obasohan's good performance Scandone AV was defeated 67-59 on the road by the lower-ranked The Flexx PT (#9). He scored 11 points. Obasohan's overall stats this season are: 6.4ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.7apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Belgian and Nigerian.

   #3. Chinemelu Elonu (206-F/C-87, college: Texas A&M, currently plays in Greece) contributed to an AEK Athens' victory against the 12th-ranked Kymis (5-11) 71-65 in the Greek A1 on Saturday night. Elonu recorded 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 17 minutes. AEK Athens (13-3) is placed third in the A1. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Elonu's overall stats are: 8.3ppg and 5.8rpg in four games he played so far.

   #4. Olatunbo Ayeni (196-F-87, college: St.Francis, NY, currently plays in Qatar) was the major contributor in an Al Wakrah's victory against the closely-ranked Al Ahli (5-9) 92-82 in the Qatari D1 in Saturday night's game. Ayeni recorded a double-double by scoring 30 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. Al Wakrah (4-10) is placed seventh in the D1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Ayeni has very high stats. He averages: 27.8ppg, 11.6rpg, 1.9apg and 2.0spg. Ayeni has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

   #5. Experienced Alex Owumi (196-G-84, college: Alcorn St., currently plays in United Kingdom) contributed to a London Lions' victory against the closely-ranked Plymouth Raiders (11-7) 107-101 in the British BBL last Sunday. He scored 25 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). London Lions (11-7) is placed fifth in the BBL. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Owumi averaged so far 14.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.8apg and 1.2spg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #6. Semi Ojeleye (201-F-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped SMU win their game against the Temple University 66-50 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Ojeleye had a double-double by scoring 30 points and getting 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. Ojeleye has very impressive stats this year: 18.2ppg, 6.8rpg and 1.5apg in 25 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #7. Chimezie Metu (211-F-97, currently studies in the States) helped USC win their game against the Washington State University 86-77 in the NCAA on Saturday night. He scored 29 points (!!!) and grabbed 8 rebounds. Metu averaged so far 14.2ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.3apg and 1.6bpg.

   #8. O.D. Anosike (203-F/C-91, college: Siena, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Openjobmetis VA (5-13) in their last game. Despite his good performance Openjobmetis VA was badly defeated 98-82 in Milano by the leading Armani. Anosike had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. This year Anosike's total stats are: 9.4ppg and 11.6rpg in 17 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Kieron Achara (208-F/C-83, agency: Two Points, college: Duquesne, currently plays in United Kingdom) was not able to secure a victory for Glasgow Rocks in their game against Leicester Riders in the British BBL, despite his very good performance last Friday. Achara was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 27 minutes. But his team was badly defeated by 20 points 94-74. Achara averaged so far 12.5ppg, 6.7rpg, 2.4apg, 1.4bpg and 1.1spg in 17 games. He holds both Scottish and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in France) couldn't help Olympique Antibes in their game against Paris-Levallois in the French ProA. Despite his very good performance on Friday night Otule was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 6 rebounds. Otule averaged so far 14.1ppg and 5.8rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

Nigeria has announced slight changes to the coaching crew of the senior men and women's national teams with immediate effect. This decision was taken after the review of the national teams activities recently by the board led by Engineer Musa Kida faction of Nigeria basketball.
