Sagaba Konate's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Malians playing currently abroad: - Jan 12, 2018

We bring you last week's top performances from Malians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former U18 international forward Sagaba Konate (203-97, currently plays college basketball in the States). He led W.Virginia to a victory against the The University of Oklahoma 89-76 in the NCAA in Sunday night's game. Konate had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 5 blocks (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 33 minutes on the court. The West Virginia University has a very good 9-1 conference record this season. This year Konate averages: 9.1ppg, 7.1rpg, 2.9bpg, 2FGP: 54.5% and FT: 73.8% in 14 games he played so far. He played for the Mali U18 national team four years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former U16 international power forward Cheick Diallo (206-96, college: Kansas, currently plays in NBA). Diallo could not help the New Orleans Pelicans (20-20) to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves (27-16). He scored 9 points (was perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line). But the New Orleans Pelicans (20-20) were badly defeated 116-98 on the road by the Timberwolves. It's Diallo's first season with the team. Diallo's overall stats this year are: 2.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 2FGP: 55.6%(25-45) and FT: 68.8%. He played for the Mali U16 national team in 2011.

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90, currently plays in France). Soumaoro contributed to Saint-Quentin's victory against the 15th-ranked Aubenas (5-11) 80-72 in the French NM1 (third division) on Saturday night. He recorded 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. It was his first game for Saint-Quentin this season. His team is placed third in the NM1. Soumaoro played for the Mali national team seven years ago.

Namory Boundy
   #4. Forward Namory Boundy (202-89, currently plays in France) was not able to help SO Maritime Boulogne in their game against Orchesien BC (7-8) in the French NM1 (third division). Boundy recorded 7 points and had 3 steals. SO Maritime Boulogne was crushed 83-62 in Orchies by the higher-ranked Orchesien BC (#10). Boundy's overall stats this season are: 4.6ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.0spg. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Boundy used to play for the Mali national team back in 2015.

   #5. Former U18 international forward Ibrahim Doumbia (198-98, currently studies in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the S.Carolina in their game against the University of Missouri (3-1) in the NCAA. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Doumbia scored only 2 points. his team was defeated 79-68 in a derby game by the University of Missouri. This season Doumbia averages just 0.4ppg. He used to play for the Mali U18 national team two years ago.

   #6. An experienced forward Mamadou Sy (196-85, college: Cloud County CC, currently plays in France) couldn't help Brissac-Aubance (6-10) in their game against Saint Vallier (15-1) in the French NM1 (third division). Sy was the second best scorer with 6 points. He also added 4 rebounds in 16 minutes. Brissac-Aubance was crushed 74-36 in Saint Vallier by the leading Saint Vallier. It was Brissac-Aubance's third consecutive loss in a row. This year Sy's overall stats are: 4.7ppg, 4.9rpg and 1.8apg in 16 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team seven years ago.

   #7. Former international swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France) is a teammate of previously mentioned Mamadou Sy and both played together in the last French NM1 game. Cisse couldn't help Brissac-Aubance (6-10) in their game against Saint Vallier (15-1). He cannot count Tuesday's game as one of the best ones. Cisse recorded only 3 points. Brissac-Aubance was crushed 74-36 in Saint Vallier by the leading Saint Vallier. Cisse has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.6ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.2apg. Cisse used to play for the Mali national team three years ago.

   #8. Forward Fousseini Konate (196-93, currently plays in NAIA) couldn't help the Point Park University in their game against the Midway College in the KIAC. He recorded 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. his team was edged 91-89 in Midway by the College. Konate's total stats this season are: 2.8ppg and 2.7rpg. He used to play for the Mali U16 national team back in 2008.


The list of other players, who all have Mali passport but never been selected to any of Mali national teams:

   #1. Tahirou Diabate (206-F-98, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Portland in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance his team was edged 70-68 at home by the Santa Clara University. Diabate recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 4 blocks. Diabate's overall stats this season are: 5.1ppg and 3.1rpg.

   #2. Nouhoum Bocoum (208-F/C-94, college: Arkansas St., currently plays in Spain) was not able to help CB Guadalajara (9-5) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the fifth-placed CB Guadalajara (9-5) lost 75-79 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Villarrobledo in the Group B. Bocoum was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 7 rebounds in 33 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Bocoum's second season in pro basketball. It was CB Guadalajara's first loss after four consecutive victories. Bocoum has relatively good stats this year: 14.1ppg and 6.9rpg in 12 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and American.

   #3. Mambi Diawara (195-G/F-94, college: Lamar St.CC, currently plays in Canada) was not able to secure a victory for the University of Calgary (9-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the University of Calgary (#5) lost 79-92 in Edmonton to the Golden Bears. Diawara was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 20 minutes. Diawara has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 24.1ppg, 8.6rpg, 2.4apg and 2.3spg in nine games. Diawara is another player who holds two passports: Mali and Canadian. Despite his Mali nationality, Diawara currently plays for the Canadian university national team and is not eligible to play for the Mali team.

   #4. Mamadou Doucoure (206-C, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Rutgers in their game against the Purdue University (10-2) in the NCAA. He scored 8 points. his team was crushed 82-51 on their home court in New Brunswick by the Purdue University. Doucoure's overall stats this season are: 4.3ppg and 3.9rpg.

   #5. Salif Boudie (205-F-95, is currently at the American university) couldn't help the Arkansas St. in their game against the Georgia State University in the NCAA. He scored 8 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 28 minutes. his team lost 75-79 on their home court in Jonesboro to the Georgia State University. This year Boudie's overall stats are: 3.4ppg and 4.0rpg in nine games.

   #6. Bakary Konate (211-C-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Minnesota in their game against the Northwestern University in the NCAA. He scored only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was crushed by 23 points 83-60. Konate's overall stats this season are: 1.2ppg and 2.7rpg.

   #7. Bourama Sidibe (208-F-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Syracuse in their game against the University of Notre Dame in the NCAA. He scored only 4 points in 10 minutes. His team was edged 51-49. This year Sidibe's overall stats are: 3.2ppg and 3.0rpg in 13 games.

   #8. Kassoum Yakwe (201-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the St.John's in their game against the Georgetown University in the NCAA. He cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. Yakwe scored only one point in 7 minutes on the court. His team was edged 69-66. This year Yakwe's total stats are: 2.8ppg and 2.7rpg in 16 games.
